HISTORY OF PIRACY
The first recorded incidences of piracy date back to 14th century BC in the
Mediterranean Sea.
Julius Caesar of the Roman Empire was once captured by pirates in Turkey
During the middle ages Arab pirates, privateers, and the Barbary corsairs plundered
the seas.
Later many of these groups of pirates sailed to the Caribbean Sea where they were
named buccaneers. These Buccaneers had significant control of the Caribbean and
their reign lasted between 1600s and the early 1700s.
In the early 19th century Chinese pirates were active in the waters off of the
Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. Their threat was eliminated by the joint forces of
the US Navy and Royal Navy during the mid-1800s.
