INTRO..
The word plastic is derived from the Greek (plastikos)
meaning capable of being shaped or molded.
Everywhere you look you will find plastics.

We use plastic products to help make our lives cleaner,

easier, safer and more enjoyable.
You will find plastics in the clothes we wear, the houses
we live in, and the cars we travel in.
The toys we play with, the televisions we watch, the
computers we use and the CDs we listen to contain
plastics.
Even the toothbrush you use every day contains
plastics!
SOURCES OF PLASTICS

Natural

Natural sources of plastics include:

plants - from which cellulose can be extracted

trees - from which latex, amber and resin can be extracted
animals - from which horn and milk (used to make glues) are
obtained
insects - from which shellac (used to make polish) is obtained

Synthetic

Synthetic plastics are chemically manufactured from:

crude oil
coal
natural gas
ORIGIN OF PETROLEUM..

Ocean Simple microscopic life forms (Plankton)

Buried in layers of sediment Dead plankton

Increasing temperature and pressure

Petroleum (crude oil) and natural gas (methane and

ethane)
TYPES OF PLASTICS

Plastics that do not undergo

chemical change in their
Thermoplastic composition when heated and can
be molded again and again.

Thermosets are permanently "set"

Thermosetting once they're initially formed and
can't be melted.

80% of the plastics produced are thermoplastics and of these Polyethylene, Polypropylene,
Polystyrene and Polyvinylchoride (PVC) are most commonly used (70%)

WHAT CAN WE DO TO SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT?

The two best changes we can

do are:
Use less plastics
To reuse plastics when
possible.

By using ONE reusable cloth bag, we can save up to 6 plastic bags a week
that translates into 24 bags a month or 288 bags a year that amounts to 22,176 bags in an
average lifetime.
OUR RESPONSIBILITY

It's impossible to eliminate most plastic from daily life, but it's prudent for
our health & environment to curb the use of some.

Proper management for disposal and public awareness would bring a

great difference in present situation.
PLASTIC Overall reduction in plastic usage.
Hand over plastics properly for recycling or disposal.
Do not let plastic litter the environment.

REUSE OF PLASTIC
BE ALERTMELAMINE CANCER
If you eat in a Melamine Plate, you may become a victim of Melamine
Cancer. Melamine is a thermosetting plastic and is non-
biodegradable. While eating when we scratch the plate with the
spoon, the melamine coating also goes into our body which may
cause Cancer. Check under your plates whether Melamine made is
written or not. Use Bone China, Glass or Steel Plates instead

Plastic bags, once ingested, cannot be digested or passed by an animal so it stays in

the gut. Plastic in an animals gut can prevent food digestion and can lead to a very
slow and painful death.
