About His Project:
Street Children of Bombay (Lens Culture)

I have been fortunate to receive the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic

Photography, which allowed me to photograph the street children of Bombay over the
course of one year. These pictures tell their story. Where they live and sleep; how they
make their money; their interaction with adults and among themselves; playing and
fighting; their love for Indian movies; gambling; sexual and drug abuse; police
harassment; remand homes and institutions; and finally, the alternatives made
available to them by various NGOs. These pictures are also a tribute to the spirit of
street children all over the world and a testimony to the contradictions of their lives:
innocent yet streetwise, never lacking for company yet lonely, children without a
childhood whose resilience and courage would put most adults to shame.

About His Project: Kathmandu's street
children
Walking around Kathmandu you just cant look past it. Hundreds of street children
roaming the streets. As the city locks down for the night they all return to small hideouts
in the outskirts of the city. Many of the children are addicted to sniffing solvents and
many of the boys suffer from sexual abuse from foreigners, locals and higher placed
street children. They have a certain hierarchy in their groups. They spend their days
begging for money and food at touristic attractions. Most of the times they sell the food
and use the money to buy more solvents to satisfy their addiction.
MY PROJECT:
Street Children Of Cairo
Proposal
My project Street Children of Cairo aims to focus on the poor and unfortunate children who are found
nearly in every street in Cairo. This phenomenon has increased immensely in the past few years. I always
wondered how such tiny human beings are thrown in the streets to fend for themselves, walking among
moving vehicles beginning for money when they should be safe at home being taken care of. Their
sweet and innocent faces affected me and I felt that I should get out of my comfort zone and capture
their harsh and hazardous reality. These children are considered a hindrance to our society where it is
believed that they are young criminals. The fact is that these children are very unlucky and people dont
think about the harshness of their lives and the abuse and violence they face daily. The streets become
their home. I intend to take shots of children in diverse streets in Cairo where they are seen doing the
abnormal when in fact to them its a way of life. People who feel sorry for them give them money, but
that does not solve the predicament, it merely increases it because people who benefit from their
beginning make great profits out of them. To aid solve this problem, we need to spread awareness
of this one form of child abuse that needs to be halted. Many people have tried to spread awareness of
this dilemma and I would be a part of it even if it wont make a great difference.
Research:
Egypt Independent: http://www.egyptindependent.com/study-3-million-children-living-
egypts-streets/
There are 3 million street children in Egypt as a result of social injustice and slum life,
according to a recent study by the National Center for Social and Criminological
Research in Egypt.
The newspaper reported that the most common crimes among street children include
theft (56 percent), homelessness (16.5 percent), begging (13.9 percent) and violence
(5.2 percent).
Book: Street kids of Bombay
Author: William Fogg
A Photographic reportage about the life of a group of kids living
on the streets of Bombay. Without families, without homes,
without skills and without opportunities, these kids face
overwhelming odds in their life. And as every human being, there
are some who rise up, and some who fall down.
