MINIMUM DESIGN EARTHQUAKE
HORIZONTAL LATERAL FORCE BUILDINGS
( CLAUSE 7.5.1)
Buildings and portions there of shall
be designed and constructed, to
resist at least the effects of design
lateral force specified in 7.5.1. But,
regardless of design earthquake
forces, buildings shall have lateral
load resisting systems capable of
resisting a horizontal force not less
than P percent of the seismic weight
of the building as shown in Table.
This load may be applied at different
floor levels in proportion to the
seismic weight of respective floors.

LATERAL ACCELERATION
FROM SERVICEABILITY CONSIDERATIONS, (HUMAN COMFORT)
UNDER STANDARD WIND LOADS WITH RETURN PERIOD OF 10
YEARS, THE MAXIMUM STRUCTURAL PEAK COMBINED LATERAL
ACCELERATION Amax IN THE BUILDING FOR ALONG AND ACROSS
WIND ACTIONS AT ANY FLOOR LEVEL SHALL NOT EXCEED VALUES
GIVEN IN TABLE, WITHOUT OR WITH THE USE OF WIND DAMPERS
IN THE BUILDING.

PERMISSIBLE PEAK
COMBINED ACCELERATION

SLENDERNESS RATIO
The maximum values of the ratio of height H to minimum base
width shall not exceed values given below.

11/27/2017 6
BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus
PLAN ASPECT RATIO
The maximum plan aspect ratio of the overall building (L/B)
shall not exceed 5.0.

Building should be well-proportioned in

keeping with the known tenets of acceptable
upper limits of overall slenderness ratio and
plan aspect ratio, and all the discussions
available in earthquake design literature on
acceptable seismic structural configurations

Importance factor

11/27/2017 15
BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus
A new value of Importance factor has been introduced
in IS 1893-(part-I) 2016.
Residential or commercial buildings or structures, with
occupancy more than 200 persons have been included
under importance factor of 1.2
This is the minimum value for which the building is to
be
designed. Other building which are not specified under
IS code may be designed for higher value of I.

Weak Storey
It is one in which the storey lateral strength is less than that in
the storey above. The storey lateral strength is the total
strength of all seismic force resisting elements sharing the
lateral storey shear in the considered direction.
Earlier in 2002 version, for weak storey, the lateral strength
should be less than 80percent of the strength of the storey
just above it .

BITSPilani, Pilani Campus
Soft Storey
It is one in which the lateral stiffness is less than that
in the storey above. The storey lateral stiffness is the
total stiffness of all seismic force resisting elements
resisting lateral earthquake shaking effects in the
considered direction.

11/27/2017 18
BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus
Most of the time, soft storey building is also the weak storey building.
In the 2016 version, these distinction has been made between soft and
weak storey.
Soft/weak storey buildings are well-known for poor performance during
earthquakes.
In Bhuj earthquake of 2001, most multistorey
buildings that collapsed had soft ground storey.
