WHAT ARE AGENTS OF
SOCIALIZATION?
The Agents of Socialization are people,
groups, or institutions that influences our
self-concept, emotions, attitudes, and
behavior.
FAMILY
The family has the greatest impact on the individual. It is the most influential
agent of socialization and plays a pivotal role in shaping the personality of
children.
It is described as the first school of life and love; the seedbed of values and
the nurturer of human nature.
The parents are the primary educators entrusted with the task of educating
their children in values, in developing in them the virtues or habits of
excellence, in forming their correct and true conscience so that children will
become not only productive members of society, but also individuals
imbued with the virtues of righteous living worthy to be called true children of
God.
According to Fr. Urtega, parents must teach their children:
How to love.
How to be morally good with clear understanding of their true
human nature.
How to understand the meaning of freedom or independence
along with personal integrity.
Civic consciousness and social responsibility.

Parents can do this task of personality formation by indicating values

and role modeling.
SCHOOL
The second home of children where teachers, by the
principle in loco parentis, are their second parents.
It broadens the childrens social milieu and expands their
interactions with others.
In school, they learn how to adjust with people of different
personality traits and learn the knowledge, skills with people
of different personality of them and will prepare them for
the life ahead.
CHURCH/RELIGION
Recognized by social philosophers as conscience formators of people.
The social institution entrusted with the task of teaching morality to
individuals and groups. In the church, individuals reach out to others and
learn their obligations toward self, family, church, society, and God.
In a democratic society, there is freedom of religion. Ecumenism is
encouraged, that is, different religions strongly encouraged to be friendly
and tolerant with one another for they share the same task of directing
people towards God and others in the society.
Religion refers to a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature and purpose
of the universe.
GOVERNMENT/POLITICS
With the government, people learn to obey laws and perform social
functions in the community where they belong with the civic consciousness
and commitment.
Respect for authority or officials in the government is fostered and
bureaucracy which started in school is more understood.
Government and politics exists in all human organizations groups or societies,
but in form ,both have different dimensions.
Politics refers to the processes in society; the way people manage their
affairs and activities in society.
Government refers to the organization through which the state expresses
and enforces its will.
MASS MEDIA
Media, either print or broadcast, also plays an important role in the
socialization process.
It is defined by Maciones as an impersonal communication aimed at a vast
audience.
Media comes from the Latin word middle, suggesting that media serves to
link or connect people of different races and religious affiliations.
In the Information Age a wide array of information brought about by
communication technolgy is made available for individuals to select. These
information either positively or negatively influence the way people think
and act.
PEER GROUP
A social group whose members have common interests, social position, and
age.
Peer pressure exists such that a child or a teenager must conform his or her
behavior with the behavior of his or her peers in order to belong and be
accepted in the peer group.
Parental guidance is encourage for children and youngsters who belong to
a peer group to serve as a check and balance because of the powerful
influence the group may have.
HEALTH SECTOR

Health affects the way a person behaves and

interacts with others. That is why, the health sector
providing health services also affects the
socialization process of an individual.
COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION AND
DEVELOPMENT
Community organizations refer to the government organizations (Gos),
nongovernment organizations (NGOs), and peoples organizations( (POs).
People in the community organize themselves to undertake developmental

Community development seems to be an elusive term. Its attainment
requires a lot of effort, political will, work ethics, networking, and the like.
