The basics of

science
Science and why we teach it to young children:

- Science is often viewed as an encyclopedia of discoveries and technological achieve-

ments.
- If you tried to teach all that has been learned in science starting in preschool and
continuing daily straight through high school you could make only a small dent in the
body of knowledge.
Science as inquiry :
- Inquiry is presented as a step beyond such process learning skills as observing inferring and
predicting.
- According to the standards. Engaging students in inquiry serves five essential sanctions:
1- Helps students "know how we know in science.
2- Develops an understanding of the nature of science.
Kindergarten and primary grade children need the following skills:
1- plan and conduct a simple investigation.
2- use data to construct reasonable explanations
Teaching the processes of inquiry:

- Science process skills are those that allow students to process new information through concrete experiences.
- The skills most appropriate for pre school and primary students are the basic skills of observing, comparing,
classifying, measuring and communication.
