Stress Management

Brian, Evelynn, Mace, Remington, Sarah

Scenario
Sam was a model student all throughout high school. She came from a low income family, who had her on a pedestal due to the
fact that she was the first in the family to attend a University. She was confident in her abilities in school, and since she was on
scholarship, she decided to take advantage and take a couple of extra courses. The first day of school came and she was as happy as
could be. She was in class 15 minutes early and sat in the front row of the lecture hall. As more and more people started walking in she
realized how big her class was, and the same happened with the rest of her classes.

A couple weeks passed and the course material progressed, but her comprehension struggled to keep up. She realized taking the
extra courses may have been a bit overwhelming. She also had a hard time asking for help because she felt that if she asked a question
the other students would judge her, so she kept to herself. A few more weeks passed and as she was checking blackboard she noticed an
Academic Status Report. She started to question her abilities and stopped trying as hard in her classes. Why bother trying if I am not
smart enough? she asked herself. One day as she was doing homework she started feeling dizzy. Assuming that it was fatigue she went
to sleep and tried to get some rest.

The next day she woke up to her alarm. A new day had come and she was ready to give her homework another shot. As she got
up to brush her teeth, her legs gave out and suddenly everything blacked out. She woke up in a hospital bed not comprehending what had
happened. She heard her mother talking to the doctor. We are afraid we have found a tumor on her brain said the doctor. A tumor, is
he talking about me?. The doctor went on, We cant remove it, but we can treat it. The procedure is quite expensive, she would have
to go through radiation therapy, and it looks like your insurance does not cover it. She was sent home a couple days later and she did
the first thing that came to mind.
Scenario Continued
Since her family could not afford the treatment she would sell her stuff. Laptop was the first to go. When she sold it she realized
that she had just gotten rid of the only thing that allowed her to do homework. She started falling behind in classes due to the radiation
treatments causing her to miss class. She also had no way of doing homework, and since all her money was being consumed by hospital
bills, she had no way of getting a new one. Her family was also helping with the bills, but they always seemed to burden her because of
it. While balancing treatment, missing classes and not even being able to hold the course load because she didnt have the resources it
was all stressing her out and was debating if school was even worth the hassle anymore.

Overwhelmed by Large Class
A major difference most people notice when making the transition from high school or community college is
that the class sizes are much larger. It can be easy to not ask questions, and disappear from lectures all
together because you are suddenly one of many. Finding a couple key people to study with/exchange notes
with can make these overwhelming classes seem easier because you realize youre not in it alone.
