Use a tourniquet
Look for the most prominent
vein
palpate and trace the path of
vein
Cleanse the area for venipuncture in a circular
motion from the center outward with a 70
percent isopropyl alcohol
Reapply tourniquet.
Anchor the vein by placing your free thumb
below the venipuncture site where the needle is
to enter and pull skin taut.
Insert the needle with the bevel facing up in
one swift motion.

Pull the plunger to draw blood
Remove the tourniquet
Withdraw the needle
Re-cap the needle
Transfer blood to tubes
Properly label tubes
Place cotton over the puncture site
Apply pressure at the puncture site for 5
minutes to stop the bleeding
Observe the patient for possible adverse
reactions
