Medical University of Nepal

 In Nepal, Two Universities and two deemed university


offers undergraduate medical education (MBBS program).

 Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University offers


MBBS program via their constitutent and affiliated
Medical Colleges.

 Whereas BPKIHS and PAHS are running their inhouse


MBBS program (i.e. they make their own curriculum,
have their own independent syllabus, entrance
examination and examination patterns.)

• MBBS Quota: MBBS program was started in
Nepal in 1978 enrolling 22 students. Now
every year more than 2100 students get enroll
for the MBBS degree.
The distribution of total quota is as follows.

MD/MS
 Postgraduate Medical Degrees

 The award of Postgraduate degrees shall include


Doctor of Medicine (M. D.) and Master of Surgery
(M. S.) in the related specialty of medical science.

 The award of the degree by different


Universities/Institutions/Academy throughout
the country should remain the same.
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees
recognized by the Nepal Medical Council are
awarded in the following

4. Dermatology
14. Psychiatry
5. Family Medicine/General Practice

9. Obstetrics & Gynecology* 18. Ophthalmology*
• In Obstetrics & Gynecology and Ophthalmology
the degree may be awarded as M.D. or M.S. As
per University/Institution/Academy rules and
regulations.
Bed strength in Clinical Departments
A department to be recognized for Postgraduate academic
program, shall have not less than 60 (sixty) beds each for
General Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and
Gynecology and Orthopedic departments, 30 (thirty) beds each
for other departments except

Dermatology which shall have a minimum of 10 (ten) beds as


most of the teaching learning in Dermatology takes place in out
patient department.

The requirements of beds shall not be apply in case of Radiology,


Anesthesia and post graduates degree courses in basic and para-
clinical departments.
For clinical departments having more than one
unit; each unit should have at least 30 (thirty)
beds in General Medicine, General Surgery,
Paediatrics, Obstetric and Gynecology and
Orthopedics.

In otherdepartment having more than one unit


each unit should have at least 15 beds.
Bed Occupancy Rate

• For normal teaching learning of Postgraduate


medical students, the patient occupancy rate
of the hospital bed in the concerned
department for concerned subject should not
be less than 70%.
History of Hospital in Nepal
The history of hospital service in Nepal starts
in the year 1889 with the establishment of Bir
Hospital, the oldest hospital now providing
general care to tertiary care to the people of
Nepal.

Bir hospital is the first teaching hospital for


compounders, dresser and later nurses
MBBS program was introduced in 1978 in

Institute of Medicine, it did not have its own


teaching hospital in beginning, so the clinical
teaching and learning activities were centered
in Bir and other hospitals in the valley
• With the support of Tribhuvan University
post graduate education was started in Bir
hospital and other hospitals in the valley
through Post Graduate Medical Education
Coordination Committee from 1994 AD.
Bir Hospital

was developed into the National Academy of


Medical Sciences (NAMS) on its glorious 114
years in 2002
 NAMS, along with 13 affiliated -----since last 12
years.

 The institution has 33 subjects of postgraduation


courses in MD/MS/MDS MCh/DM and two levels
of nursing education have been developed.

 The annual intake has increased from 46 to 93 in


postgraduate courses.
• The MD/MS/MDS training program
consists of a three years postgraduate
residential degree course in different
major subjects. It is a Basic Specialist
Training Programs.
Entry criteria for MD/MS/MDS program are as
follows.
 Candidates should have MBBS or equivalent degree
recognized by the Nepal Medical Council.

 Candidates should have minimum two years of work


experience in

 Government, University or other similar recognized hospitals


after temporary registration with Medical Council.

 Candidates should achieve minimum 50% marks in the


written MCQ type entrance examination. Selection of
candidates is based on the basis of merit list., Candidates
have to indicate their subjects of choice in the entrance form.
Entry criteria for DM/MCh program
are as follows.
The candidate must possess a MBBS and
postgraduate MD/MS degree in specified
subject and 2 years of working experience.

He/she must have obtained at least 50% marks


in entrance examinations.

The sponsored candidate must have no objection


letter from their concerned ministry/institution.
