Presentation Outline

– What ZigBee is
– What ZigBee does

– How ZigBee works

– Academic research

– Products
– Future

2
The ZigBee Name

• Named for erratic, zig-zagging patterns of bees

between flowers
• Symbolizes communication between nodes in
a mesh network
• Network components analogous to queen bee,
drones, worker bees

3
What is ZigBee?
• Technological Standard Created for Control
and Sensor Networks
• Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard
• Created by the ZigBee Alliance

4
The 802 Wireless Space

5
ZigBee and Other Wireless
Technologies

6
ZigBee Aims
• Low data rate
• Low power consumption
• Small packet devices

7
ZigBee Frequencies
• Operates in Unlicensed Bands
• ISM 2.4 GHz Global Band at 250kbps
• 868 MHz European Band at 20kbps
• 915 MHz North American Band at 40kbps

8
What Does ZigBee Do?
• Designed for wireless controls and sensors
• Operates in Personal Area Networks
(PAN’s) and device-to-device networks
• Connectivity between small packet devices
• Control of lights, switches, thermostats,
appliances, etc.

9
How ZigBee Works
• Topology
– Star
– Cluster Tree
– Mesh
• Network coordinator, routers, end devices

10
How ZigBee Works
• States of operation
– Active
– Sleep
• Devices
– Full Function Devices (FFD’s)
– Reduced Function Devices (RFD’s)
• Modes of operation
– Beacon
– Non-beacon

11
Modes of operation

Non-beacon network communication

Beacon network communication

12
ZigBee Security

MAC FRAME KEY SEQ ENCRYPYED MAC PAYLOAD MIC

HDR CONT CONT

• MAC data provides integrity protection

NWK FRAME KEY SEQ ENCRYPYED MAC PAYLOAD MIC

HDR CONT CONT

• NWK header is masked to set non static bits to zero and

then the NWK frame is protected .

13
ZigBee Network Configuration

14

The ZigBee Network Coordinator
The ZigBee Network Node

• Sets up a network
•Designed for battery powered or
• Transmits network beacons
high energy savings
• Manages network nodes
•Searches for available networks
• Stores network node information
•Transfers data from its application
• Routes messages between paired nodes
as necessary
• Typically operates in the receive state
•Determines whether data is
pending
•Requests data from the network
coordinator
•Can sleep for extended periods
15
Responsibilities of the ZIGBEE nwk
layer
• Starting a network:
• Joining and leaving a network
• Configuring a new device
• Addressing
• Synchronization within a network
• Security
• Routing

•Peak Information Rate
•~128 Kbit/second
•New slave enumeration = 30ms
typically
• Sleeping slave changing to
active = 15ms typically
• Active slave channel access time
