• The main character isn’t named
Doctor Who – his real name is unknown • He introduces himself as “The Doctor.” Naturally, people ask… BUT REALLY, DOCTOR WHO? • The Doctor is an alien, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey – the last of his kind • Time Lords study the balance of time in the universe, but never interfere • The Doctor decided to break that rule, and leave Gallifrey to save anyone in need – anywhere in space and time • Time Lords give themselves titles in place of their real names. The Doctor chose his name because doctors help people BUT REALLY, DOCTOR WHO? • Okay, so, which of the guys in these pictures IS The Doctor? • All of them! • Time Lords don’t die, they regenerate into new bodies (aka, other actors!) • So they are able to live incredibly long. The Doctor is over 900 years old. • The most recent Doctors are the 10th, 11th, and 12th ALL RIGHT STOP, REGENERATE AND LISTEN • The first Doctor when the show returned in 2009 was the 9th • His companion, Rose, saved the Earth by absorbing a powerful Time Vortex • The 9th Doctor was able to save her by taking it into himself, but at a cost… • And the show continues, with a new actor – the 10th Doctor! And so on. THE DOCTOR’S TOOLBOX • TARDIS: Time And Relative Dimension In Space – the Doctor’s time and space travel machine • The Doctor stole it when he left Gallifrey • Broken chameleon circuit - stuck as a “police box” • The inside exists in a different dimension than the outside • So whenever someone steps in, they say, “It’s bigger on the inside!” • …which the Doctor enjoys THE DOCTOR’S TOOLBOX • The Doctor also carries a sonic screwdriver • It can do…well, a lot of things: Lock picking Regenerate broken items Light candles Burn and cut substances Darken eyeglass lenses to Create force field make sunglasses Remotely detonate machines Microphone Modify a mobile phone Amplify sound waves Detect and interpret signals Deactivate camouflage Superpower X-ray machines Conduct medical scan Scan and classify matter Disarm weapons, electronics Remotely control devices Shatter glass Flashlight Detect life nearby Generate a shock Intercept and conduct Operate machinery like Tighten and loosen screws teleportation computers
• Many Time Lords carry sonic weapons. The Doctor
wanted a sonic item that repairs things instead of breaking them. THE COMPANIONS • The Doctor never travels alone! He always has at least one human companion • Like a superhero’s sidekick, companions are clever, caring, and help The Doctor save the day THE COMPANIONS THE COMPANIONS THE COMPANIONS AND…THE MONSTERS
• Of course, in order for The Doctor to
be a hero, there have to be some villains • The villains are usually aliens with selfish, vengeful, and greedy schemes • The Doctor doesn’t aim to hurt or kill, but outsmart his enemies GUESS WHO’S BACK, BACK AGAIN?
• One monster featured in multiple
episodes are the Cybermen • Cybermen were invented by humans! • They believe all humans must be upgraded – to be all-powerful with no emotions GUESS WHO’S BACK, BACK AGAIN?
• The Doctor’s worst enemies are the
Daleks • The Daleks started the Time War that destroyed the other Time Lords • Daleks are ruthless. They believe they are superior, and will try to conquer the universe any way they can • EXTERMINATE! NOW LET’S REVIEW… • The Doctor is an alien with a spaceship that is also a time machine, called a TARDIS • (and it’s bigger on the inside) • With human companions from Earth, he saves anyone and anything in the universe that needs help • Using his sonic screwdriver and quick-thinking, The Doctor defeats villains like Cybermen and Daleks with tricks – not violence • Instead of dying, The Doctor regenerates into a new body and continues his adventures NOW YOU KNOW:
