Ionic Compounds

PLO: I CAN NAME IONIC COMPOUNDS.

You should know…

• Ions: an atom or molecule that has either a

positive/negative charge due to the loss/gain of
electrons.
• Loss of electron(s) = positive charge
• Gain of electron(s) = negative charge
IONIC COMPOUNDS

• Ionic compound: A compound made of oppositely

charged ions.
• Usually made up of two types of elements: a metal & non-
metal.
• Ionic bond: A strong attraction that forms between
oppositely charged ions.
EXAMPLE!!

+ -

Na Cl Na+ Cl-

Sodium atom (Na) Chlorine atom (Cl) Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Naming Binary Ionic Compounds
• Binary ionic compound: Ionic compound that contains
only two elements.
1. Metal ion (positively charged) comes first.
2.Non-metal ion (negatively charged) comes second.
3. Change ending of the second element to –ide.
Ex) Sodium chloride, magnesium oxide, calcium sulfide.
