Past Continuous (USES)

• To express activities in progress before, and probably


after, a particular time in the past
At 7:00 am this morning I was having my breakfast.

• To express an interrupted past activity


When the phone rang, I was having a shower.

Exceptions when adding 'ing
• Silent e is dropped (but: does not apply for -ee)

• After a short, stressed vowel, the final consonant is
doubled
sit - sitting
• Final l is always doubled
travel - travelling
• Final ie becomes y.
lie - lying
Past Simple or Continuous

• Sometimes both tenses are possible.

• The Past Simple focuses on past actions as complete


facts.

• The Past Continuous focuses on the duration of past


activities

• A: I didn’t see you at the party last night.


• B: No. I stayed at home and watched the football.

• A: I didn’t see you at the party last night.


• B: No, I was watching the football at home.
Past Simple vs Continuous

I was watching television when he arrived.

• The first action is a long action - it lasted for a period of


time. We therefore use the past continuous.

• The second action is a short action that has interrupted


the first. So for this we need past simple
