INTRODUCTION
• Building as a system:
A building is very complex system, wherein
each part of the system affects every other part
of the system.
• Energy uncertainty:
Fossil fuels currently provide 95 percent of the
world's commercial energy supply, whereas
renewable energy sources supply less than five
percent.

ENERGY USE IN BUILDINGS

• This information has a direct impact on us as
builders. Buildings comprise 35 percent of direct
energy. Of that 35 percent
• 64 percent goes into heating, ventilation, and air
conditioning;
• 24 percent heats hot water;
• 13 percent provides lighting
• In terms of carbon dioxide production, in total,
buildings are responsible for 48% of all
greenhouse gases.

WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING

• A green building may be defined as a building, which
depletes the natural resources to the minimum during
construction and operation. It maximizes the use of
efficient building materials and construction practices,
optimizes use of onsite power sources and sinks by
bioclimatic architectural practices, uses minimum energy
to power itself, uses efficient equipment to meet its
lightning, air conditioning and other needs, maximize use
of renewable sources of energy and uses efficient waste
and water management practices and provides
comfortable and hygienic indoor working conditions.

VARIOUS ASPECTS OF GREEN

BUILDING DESIGN
• Site planning
• Building envelope design
• Building system design
• Integration of renewable energy sources to
generate energy onsite
• Water and waste management in a building
• Selection of ecological sustainable materials
• Indoor environmental quality

SOME GREEN BUILDING Mechanical Engineering

FEATURES
• Use of on-site renewable energy.
• Energy efficient equipment for air conditioning and lighting systems.
• Cfc free HVAC equipment.
• Harvesting of site energy.
• Reduction of impervious areas to prevent water run off.
• Measurement and verification plan to ensure energy and water
savings.
• Controls and building management system.
• Recycling of construction debris to other sites.
• Providing daylight and views for the occupied areas.
• Use of low VOC.
• Waste and water management.

COST OF GREEN BUILDING

• How much more will it cost is always the first question
from someone new to the field.
• The answer will be “it depends”.
• It depends on the experience of the builder, how early in
the design process were green building features
incorporated, and how green or energy efficient does the
design team wants the home to be.
• But I think it is worth to invest more because you can
save your heating bills by 30-50% just by facing majority
of windows towards south.
• When energy improvements are involved, costs are
really investments. Money spent on energy
improvements reduce monthly utility bills.

CASE STUDY OF CII-sohrabji Mechanical Engineering

godrej green business centre

• The building has been awarded the coveted
“platinum rating”, the first building in India and
third building in the world to get this rating.
 SUSTAINABLE SITE FEATURES:
• Facility for charging electric automobiles.
• Open space at the site exceeds the local
requirements by more than 25%.
 WATER EFFICIENCY:
• Rain water harvesting
• Recycling of 100% grey water and treatment.
• Roof garden covering 60%of roof area.
Department
of
Mechanical Engineering

 OPTIMUM ENERGY EFFICIENCY:

• Design of air conditioning systems in accordance with
ashrae 90.1-2001.
• U-value of roof 0.052 btu/hr sq. ft *f.
• Low U-value of glazing.
• Water cooled scroll chiller with COP of 4.23
 MINERALS AND RESOURCES:
• Use of fly ash based cement.
• Collection, storage and disposal of building waste like
paper and plastics.
• Use of resources from other sites like steel, doors,
broken china mosaic pieces for flooring.

ONSITE ENERGY SOURCES

• This building is using 23KWp roof integrated solar
photovoltaic system is used to generate 29000 KWh of
power.
• The photovoltaic system along with the energy efficiency
measures adopted in the building reduced its energy
cost by nearly 55% as compared to baseline building.

ADVANTAGES AND Mechanical Engineering

DISADVANTAGES
• ADVANTAGES
1) 30% to 40% reduction in energy costs.
2) 20% to 30% reduction in power consumption.
3) Improve productivity of occupants.
4) Enhance occupant comfort.
5) Green corporate image.

• DISADVANTAGES
1) The main disadvantage of green building is its high cost
2) in some instance a green builder may use a recycled
product containing chemicals that emit volatile organic compounds that have
been found to be toxic to humans.
3) green builder may choose to replace al the light bulbs with energy
efficient florescent lights which are known to emit more radiation when
studies have shown that radiation can potentially cause health problems.

GREEN BUILDING RATING Mechanical Engineering

SYSTEM
• There have been buildings, which adopt one or more green
features. To recognize the extent of green features that a building
adopts, rating system have been evolved.
• The prime objective of these rating systems is to bring in a change
in the market wherein user demands green products.
• The most popular rating system being adopted is the LEED
(leadership in energy and environmental design) system of the US
green building council based in Washington.
• Sri lanka, Canada, china, India and Spain already have building
projects, which have registered for the LEED rating.
• Apart from that India has its own green building council.

OPPORTUNITIES
• In developing countries Growth potential of
like India, population
growth is expected at green buildings in India

consumption rate is 2007
expected to grow at estimated annual 5400 5625 5850 608

building @ 4% growth
• There is tremendous
potential for construction Annual potential for 380 510 585 730
in India. The overall green buildings

investment towards urban

building construction in % share of green 7% 9% 10% 12

CONCLUSION
• The awareness of green buildings in India
has begun and caught the attentions of
many major corporate.
• Green buildings will be the mantra of the
building industry in the near future.
• Energy savings of up to 60% is
achievable, if buildings are designed using
green buildings principles.
