MCS-MANAGEMENT STYLE

 Before a MCS is designed for an organisation , the


management style of the CEO will have to be properly
understood.
 What is this management style?
 A management style can be internal control, external control
or mixed control.

 Internal Control Management Style has the following


characteristics:
a. Participation of employees in the managerial decision
making process and involvement in not only of the
achievement of goals but also in their setting up.
b. Teamwork encouragement and helping each other to identify
and solve individual problems.
c. Rewards and Incentives based on overall performance and
not individual performance.

 Advantages-
a. Motivates employees towards goal congruence.
b. Honest feedback on managerial decisions
c. Creates a feeling of belonging, loyalty and oneness with the
organisation amongst the employees.

 Disadvantages-
a. Dilution of Managerial Control
b. Employee Apathy & non qualification
c. Individual performance may not be properly rewarded
resulting into islands of dissatisfaction

 External Control Management Style has the following


characteristics:
a. Setting of stiff and difficult targets-basically a target
oriented approach
b. Non manipulative and strict internal controls and
regulations
c. Individual performance linked incentives

 Advantages:
a. Individual performance motivation
b. Strict performance and task controls ensure employee
performance monitoring without manipulations

 Disadvantages:
a. Non commitment towards organisation –non goal
congruence.
b. Danger of withholding of negative information.
c. Absence of teamwork

 Mixed Control Management Style has the following


characteristics:
a. Mixture of both the above styles depending how it benefits
the organisation
