Rugby

The history of rugby and these other ball games can

trace its roots back to ancient England, around to 10th
century.

According to legend, in 1823, William Webb Ellis, a

student, picked up the ball and ran toward the goal.

Rugby is the world`s third most popular outdoor sport.

26
Tennis

The origins of the game can be traced to a 12th–13th-

century French handball game called jeu de
paume (“game of the palm”).

The name comes from the French word “tenez!” (in the
sense of “here it comes!”), which you said to your
opponent as you were about to serve.

Tennis originally was known as lawn tennis, because it

was played on grass courts by Victorian gentlemen and
ladies.

27
Wimbledon

The Wimbledon tennis tournament is one of the oldest

sporting events in the world.

It began in 1877 in Wimbledon, London at the All

England Croquet Club.

1st of 4 Grand Slam Tournaments throughout the year.

Only Grand Slam to play on grass courts.

• “White does not include off-white or cream.”
• There can only be “a single trim of color no wider than 1
cm”.
• “Any (colored) undergarments that either are or can be
visible during play (including due to perspiration)” are not
allowed.
• This rule of all-white uniforms for players has been in
practice since the tournament’s inception in 1877.

John Isner versus Nicolas Mahut is the longest match

Wimbledon has ever
seen. In 2010, the
American Isner, finally
won the match.
It lasted 11 hours and
5 minutes.

Cricket

Cricket was invented in the vast fields of England,

supposedly by shepherds who herded their flock. Later
on this game was shown benevolence by aristocrats, and
now has the stature of being England's national game.

After a century now, cricket stands in the international

arena, with a place of its own. Cricket involves two teams
with 11 players on each side. The captain who wins the
toss decides whether his team bats or bowls first. If they
bat first , their aim is to score a lot of runs and make
sure the other team does not reach that score.

30
Cricket
Cricket is played in many formats , but the most
popular are TEST CRICKET and ONE DAY cricket.
In TEST cricket the game goes on for 5 days, with
each team batting twice - if time permits. ONE
DAY is the most popular format, with each team
getting 300 balls to score runs. And the other
team tries to outscore them within the same
number of balls

Cricket

Confused? Maybe just remember this:

• cricket is a bat-and-ball game

• there are 11 players per team. Each team takes turns at bat, trying to score runs, while
the other team fields
• the bowler in cricket is like the pitcher in baseball but he gets a running start
• there are two wickets (bases), three stumps (sticks), topped by another two sticks
(bails) which the bowler tries to hit to get the batter out
• the batter hits the ball and tries to run back and forth between the wickets as many
times as possible to score multiple runs before he is thrown out
• a normal cricket match lasts a few hours but can also last up to five days
• cricket players wear all white (cricket whites) and generally stop for tea (or lunch) mid
match.

Darts

The game of darts is an interesting game that’s

enjoyed by millions. It was started over a hundred years
back. The first thing that comes to your mind when you
talk about darts is a group of people in a pub or a bar
enjoying the game. Darts is not limited to such casual
public places only; it is also considered a serious
business by professional dart players.

From competitive sports to a casual pub game,

dart game play is trending among all age groups. Its
inception can be traced way back to the end of the 19th
century; where soldiers used to aim at casks or tree
trunks with short arrows, this quickly became a pastime
in the battlefield.

33
Darts
Each player has three darts and they have to throw all
three one by one. Before starting to play, each player
should be assigned a score. The aim is to get the score
down to 0 in as few visits to the oche as possible. Every
time a player visit the oche they should try to hit their
darts on the board where it gives them the largest score,
which is up to 180 points in a single round. This could be
done by hitting triple twenty three times in a single visit to
the dart.

34
Table tennis

Table tennis, also known as ping pong, is a

sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball
back and forth across a table using a small bat. The
game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.
Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as
follows: players must allow a ball played toward them to
bounce one time on their side of the table, and must
return it so that it bounces on the opposite side at least
once.

A point is scored when a player fails to return

the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick
reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits
an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great
advantage.

35
Table tennis

The sport originated in Victorian

England, where it was played among
the upper-class as an after-dinner
game. Tennis is an Olympic sport and
is played at all levels of society at all
ages. The sport can be played by
anyone who can hold a racket,
including people in wheelchairs.
Most historians believe that tennis
originated in England in the 12th
century, but the ball was then struck
with the palm of the hand. However,
in the 16th century rackets came into
use and the game began to be called
"tennis."

36
Badminton

Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to

hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played
with larger teams, the most common forms of the game
are "singles" (with one player per side) and "doubles"
(with two players per side).

Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in

a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a
rectangular indoor court. Points are scored by striking
the shuttlecock with the racquet and landing it within
the opposing side's half of the court.

37
Badminton

A shuttlecock weighs between 4.74

and 5.50 g. and is composed of 16
feathers. The speed of the
shuttlecock varies in different
regions of the planet. Environmental
factors such as humidity and
temperature make the shuttlecock to
fly faster or slow. If fold inwards, the
shuttlecock will fly faster while doing
outward, it will fly more slowly.
Badminton is a little
dangerous sport. However players
can suffer serious visual injuries
because of the speed which takes the
shuttlecock. In this sense, the use of
protective goggles is recommended.
