POST 12- AUDIENCE RESEARCH

By Beth Tarbuck
Conclusion: After reviewing the answers to this question I have found out that an
entertaining documentary Is the most popular choice to produce. I also found that
40% of people are interested in educational documentaries meaning for our
documentary we will produce both of these aspects
Conclusion: On our second question our results showed us that the audience like
these types of documentaries because they are fun filled, but also the audience can
learn at the same time. This further proves why we want to make this type of
documentary.
Conclusion: From this question we gathered that 100% of our primary target
audience likes their questions to be answered at the end of a documentary. As a
result to this we have decided to make our documentary have a closed narrative.
Conclusion: From our fourth question we wanted to engage with out audience and
look into documentaries that interested them, and find out what it was about these
documentaries that created this interest. We found that all the documentaries they
suggested were again educational but entertaining.
Conclusion: For our question five we wanted the audience to explain to us what they like
about the making of documentaries. As a result to 80% of recipients voicing they prefer
the production team to be behind the camera we have not included reflexive mode in our
documentary.
Conclusion: With this question we wanted to grasp an idea of what our audience
would be unhappy with seeing in our documentary. From the results we got, we created
an idea that our documentary would be in formative and entertaining without it being
too extravagant.
Conclusion: From the answers we got to this question we have decided to make our
documentary with a circular narrative allowing us to finish where we started.
Conclusion: When looking at the replies to question eight we found that our audience
prefers a single strand narrative within a documentary, as a result of this we are going to
make our documentary with a single strand narrative to keep our audience engaged.
Conclusion: As a result of our question nine we have found that 60% of our audience
would like a distinct beginning middle and end. As a result of this response we are
planning on making our documentary within these three main parts, sticking to the
narrative.
Conclusion: From our question ten answers we found that 100% of our audience would not
enjoy a bias documentary and would love to see opposing opinions. We are going to include
opposing opinions in our documentary to allow the audiences mind to wonder what side
they believe they are on, creating more audience engagement.
SIGNIFICANT RESULTS

From the responses shown I have concluded that people between the ages of
17-18 prefer entertaining and educational documentaries. Over documentaries
that are raising awareness. I found that people like watching documentaries for
fun being left with no unanswered questions. I also found that 80% of the
people who answered the questionnaire prefer the production team to be
behind the camera instead of participating themselves. The results show that a
circular and linear narrative are preferred. 60% of people prefer a distinct
beginning middle and end and like the documentary to have more than one
opinion.
SECONDARY TARGET AUDIENCE

Our secondary target audience is 25-35 year olds. I showed my 25 year old
brother a short clip from the documentary Dark states: trafficking sex by
Louis Theroux. My brother liked the documentary as it focused on a serious
topic and educated him on peoples way of life. He also enjoyed the
documentary as it used participatory mode meaning the documentary maker
was also the interviewer in the documentary. He however disliked that it only
shows a linear narrative saying ‘it felt boring’.
