1. In which tube (A, B, C) have you observed hydrolysis of starch and sucrose? Prove
your answer.
Starch: In Tube A the hydrolysis of starch was observed. Heating of starch in the
presence of concentrated HCl causes its hydrolysis into
glucose. Glucose reacts with Benedict’s reagent and
orange-red color was observed in a positive result. Iodine test is a
test for the presence of starch in which sample turns blue-black in
color. However, since starch was broken down or
hydrolysed , blue-black was not observed. Therefore iodine test
indicate the completion of hydrolysis in starch when
blue-black color is not observed.
