Paul’s Text (Hab.2:4) Sections

“He who through Ch.1-4
faith is righteous… Death of Christ for believers
Righteousness through faith
alone in Christ alone

shall live.” Ch.5-8

“Not only that, but we rejoice in our

sufferings, knowing that suffering produces
endurance, and endurance produces character,
and character produces hope, and hope does
not put us to shame, because God’s love has
been poured into our hearts through the Holy
Spirit who has been given to us” Romans 5:3-5

We rejoice, even in the midst of troubles,

because we know that the sovereign God
loves us.

1. Sufferings are evidence that we are the

beloved sons and daughters of God.

Hebrews 12:5-6 (ESV)

5 And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses

you as sons?
“My son, do not regard lightly
the discipline of the Lord,
nor be weary when reproved by him.
6 For the Lord disciplines

the one he loves,

and chastises every son whom he receives.”
7

Hebrews 12:7–11 (ESV)

7It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is

treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his

father does not discipline? 8If you are left without
discipline, in which all have participated, then you are
illegitimate children and not sons. 9Besides this, we have
had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected
them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of
spirits and live? 10For they disciplined us for a short time
as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our
good, that we may share his holiness. 11For the moment
all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later
it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who
have been trained by it.
8

Painful discipline inflicted in love is good for our

children.
• It trains them
• It yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness

Painful discipline inflicted in love is also good for God’s

children.

From God’s Word we learn that sufferings strengthen our

faith.

Our sufferings are not random, without reason.

Our sufferings have a purpose in God’s good plan for us.

When we suffer, we simply don’t need to ask, “Why me?”

C.S.Lewis:

“God whispers to us in our pleasures,

speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our
pains: it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf
world”
(Problem of Pain, p.81).

The sufferings of a Christian point us to

God’s love for us, and that fills our hearts
with hope.

Mark 10:29–30 (ESV)
Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one
who has left house or brothers or sisters or
mother or father or children or lands, for my
sake and for the gospel, 30who will not receive
a hundredfold now in this time, houses and
brothers and sisters and mothers and children
and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to
come eternal life.”

John 16:33 (ESV)

33“I have said these things to you, that in me

you may have peace. In the world you will

have tribulation. But take heart; I have
overcome the world.”
