MASCOT- SHERA
 Shera, mascot of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, is the
most visible face of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi.
His name comes from the Hindi word Sher – meaning tiger. Shera
truly represents the modern Indian. In Indian mythology, the tiger is
associated with Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Shakti (or
female power) and the vanquisher of evil.
 Shera embodies values that the nation is proud of: majesty,
power, charisma, intelligence and grace. His athletic prowess,
courage and speed on the field are legendary. He is also a reminder
of the fragile environment he lives in and our responsibility towards
the protection of his ecosystem.
 Delhi is inviting every person across all
divides – India & common wealth- to let go of
themselves & participate in the Games to the
best of their abilities ,in the true sprit of the
games.
 The Queen's Baton relay began when the baton, which contains Queen Elizabeth II's
message to the athletes, left Buckingham Palace on 29 October 2009. The baton will
arrive at the 2010 Games opening ceremony on 3 October 2010, after visiting the other
70 nations of the Commonwealth and travelling throughout India, reaching millions of
people to join in the celebrations for the Games.

 The baton was designed by Michael Foley, a graduate of the National Institute of
Design. It is a triangular section of aluminium twisted into a helix shape and then
coated with coloured soils collected from all regions of India. The coloured soils are a
first for the styling of a Queen's Baton. A jewel-encrusted box was used to house the
Queen's message, which was laser-engraved onto a miniature 18 carat gold leaf –
representative of the ancient Indian 'patras. The Queen's baton is ergonomically
contoured for ease of use. It is 664 millimetres high, 34 millimetres wide at the base,
and 86 millimetres wide at the top and weighs 1,900 grams.

To prepare for the energy-usage spike during the
Games and to end chronic power cuts in Delhi, the
government is undertaking a large power-production
initiative to increase power production to 7,000 MW
(from the current 4,500 MW). To achieve this goal,
the government plans to streamline the power
distribution process, direct additional energy to
Delhi, and construct new power plants. In fact, the
government has promised that by 2010, Delhi will
have a surplus of power.

the year.

Indian Olympics Association (IOA);
Organising Committee (OC);
Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD);

The requirement to fulfil multiple functional roles as well as several support areas
in the organisation and management of an event of the stature of the XIX
Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi also includes several ministries, departments
and agencies of GoI and several local and municipal bodies of the GNCTD within
the purview of delivery partners.

Positive aspects on the Indian economy
The commonwealth games are likely to give a boom to the
Indian economy as the amount to be spent on it is quite large
and so are thought to be its reaping benefits on various
industries…..
Transport
To expand road infrastructure, flyovers, cloverleaf flyovers,
and bridges have been planned to improve links for the Games
and city in general. To improve traffic flow on existing roads,
plans are underway to make both the inner and outer Ring
roads signal free.
The Delhi Metro will be expanded to accommodate
more people and boost the use of public transport
during the 2010 games. At 420 km long, it will be one
of the world's longest networks.
Indira Gandhi International Airport is being
modernised, expanded, and upgraded. Costing nearly
US$ 1.95 billion, Terminal 3 has improved airport
passenger capacity to more than 37 million passengers
a year by 2010. A new runway is being constructed,
allowing for over 75 flights an hour and – at over
4400 metres long – it will be one of Asia's longest.
TOURIST INDUSTRY
Commonwealth games is not only a significant matter
for sports but also for tourism industry in India. Around
two million foreign tourists and 3.5 million tourists from
different part of India are likely to arrive in Delhi for
Common Wealth Games 2010.

It seems that there will be a high rise in the number of

international passengers from 25 million last year to 45
million by 2010 and the number of foreign tourists is
also expected to rise from 4.43 percent to 10 percent.
Aid To Other Industry:
Indian government is working very hard to fulfill its goal
before the targeted time. This event will play a key role in
boosting many industries and sectors such as tourism,
marketing, aviation, advertising and hospitality sectors.
The government has also extended a five year tax rebate to the
tourism industry to promote the growth of this industry in
India. Another ambitious planning of Indian government is to
teach English to low income individuals like cab drivers,
waiters gate man and service staffs.
Missed deadlines, bloated budgets, multiple agencies
working at cross purposes, the scramble to get
Commonwealth Games venue ready on time is a tragic
example of inefficiency and bureaucratic inertia
Investing such a huge amount of money just for a sports
event is’nt worth it. It became a problem as the
government is raising prices to collect funds for the
commonwealth games which has resulted in a problem
for the common people to meet their daily needs .
The countdown is ticking for a nation that still looks like a messy construction site
with roads filled with rubbles, new construction boards pulled up every week, and
common man grumbling over rising taxes to pay for the Common Wealth Games.
The government is in a hitch to get things into place as soon as possible. This is
because the deadlines are near and the work is not completed yet. The following
facts depict this:-
STADIUMS- 17 Venues, 5 incomplete, 4 damaged….
Deadline-31st July.
OVERLAYS- the timing, scoring, result equipment will be in place only by
September-end. No time to test.
FLYOVERS AND ROADS- 9 major projects. All incomplete. Deadline
August 31st.
ACCOMODATIONS- Games village and Vasant Kunj flats for officials
not ready. Renovations of hotels incomplete.
CATERING- No caterer finalised till date.
SPONSORSHIP- Rs.342 crore from 10 sponsors .
Target- Rs.1,800 crore.
The Jawaharlal nehru stadium, which is to host all key events is still
struggling to meet its 31st july deadline when the stadium resembles open
drains and the site in its early stages of construction.
The Yamuna sports complex still has ceilings and wooden floorings
damaged due to water logging.
The Talkatora stadium has major problems of flooding due to leakage.
Every approach road to the venue is dug up, water logged, minus pavements
and dividers leading to flooding each time it rains.
And, to add to the flaws, some of the world’s best
athletes have pulled out of the games robbing it out
of its lustre.
The security agencies need atleast 45 days to secure
the venue, the state of which looks unlikely now.
The commonwealth games may add to the pride of the Indian
economy, but, in reality is our nation even ready to host the
games??? Has the government been able to fulfill the expectations of
the masses???
Of great concern the Answer is ‘NO’. According to M.S Gill, ‘when
he took over the 3 main stadiums, the work had’nt even started, until
2008.’
Sheila dixit states a cause to be ‘nervous.’ The biggest challenge for
them is to host the games completing all facilities on time. Thus, for
this reason the government is no doubt stressed.
The present scenario of Delhi, the host capital is no doubt alarming. Work is not
being completed on time, projects are lying pending, people are feeling against
the government.
Thus, according to the present situation it can be said that the commonwealth
games in present has shaken the Indian economy to a great extent. The nation is in
a state of run, to host and complete the games on time.
The future scenario may be of help to the nation as the various industries can be
given a boom, but, at present the government actually needs to buck up so that no
hindrance is caused to the name of the nation.
