We are Ready Come out and Play

MASCOT- SHERA
 Shera, mascot of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi, is
the most visible face of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010
Delhi. His name comes from the Hindi word Sher – meaning tiger.
Shera truly represents the modern Indian. In Indian mythology, the
tiger is associated with Goddess Durga, the embodiment of Shakti
(or female power) and the vanquisher of evil.
 Shera embodies values that the nation is proud of: majesty,
power, charisma, intelligence and grace. His athletic prowess,
courage and speed on the field are legendary. He is also a reminder
of the fragile environment he lives in and our responsibility
towards the protection of his ecosystem.

Queen’s Baton Relay
About Queen’s Baton Relay
 The Queen's Baton relay began when the baton, which contains Queen Elizabeth II's message to
the athletes, left Buckingham Palace on 29 October 2009. The baton will arrive at the 2010
Games opening ceremony on 3 October 2010, after visiting the other 70 nations of the
Commonwealth and travelling throughout India, reaching millions of people to join in the
celebrations for the Games.

 The baton was designed by Michael Foley, a graduate of the National Institute of Design. It is a
triangular section of aluminium twisted into a helix shape and then coated with coloured soils
collected from all regions of India. The coloured soils are a first for the styling of a Queen's
Baton. A jewel-encrusted box was used to house the Queen's message, which was laser-
engraved onto a miniature 18 carat gold leaf – representative of the ancient Indian 'patras. The
Queen's baton is ergonomically contoured for ease of use. It is 664 millimetres high, 34
millimetres wide at the base, and 86 millimetres wide at the top and weighs 1,900 grams.

Negative effects of the Commonwealth Games
2010
Missed deadlines, bloated budgets, multiple agencies
working at cross purposes, the scramble to get
Commonwealth Games venue ready on time is a tragic
example of inefficiency and bureaucratic inertia
Investing such a huge amount of money just for a sports
event is’nt worth it. It became a problem as the
government is raising prices to collect funds for the
commonwealth games which has resulted in a problem
for the common people to meet their daily needs .
The countdown is ticking for a nation that still looks like a messy construction site
with roads filled with rubbles, new construction boards pulled up every week, and
common man grumbling over rising taxes to pay for the Common Wealth Games.
The government is in a hitch to get things into place as soon as possible. This is
because the deadlines are near and the work is not completed yet. The following
facts depict this:-
STADIUMS- 17 Venues, 5 incomplete, 4 damaged….
Deadline-31st July.
OVERLAYS- the timing, scoring, result equipment will be in place only by
September-end. No time to test.
FLYOVERS AND ROADS- 9 major projects. All incomplete. Deadline
August 31st.
ACCOMODATIONS- Games village and Vasant Kunj flats for officials not
ready. Renovations of hotels incomplete.
CATERING- No caterer finalised till date.
SPONSORSHIP- Rs.342 crore from 10 sponsors .
Target- Rs.1,800 crore.
The Jawaharlal nehru stadium, which is to host all key events is still
struggling to meet its 31st july deadline when the stadium resembles open
drains and the site in its early stages of construction.
The Yamuna sports complex still has ceilings and wooden floorings
damaged due to water logging.
The Talkatora stadium has major problems of flooding due to leakage.
Every approach road to the venue is dug up, water logged, minus pavements
and dividers leading to flooding each time it rains.
And, to add to the flaws, some of the world’s best
athletes have pulled out of the games robbing it out
of its lustre.
The security agencies need atleast 45 days to secure
the venue, the state of which looks unlikely now.
CONCLUSION
The commonwealth games may add to the pride of the Indian
economy, but, in reality is our nation even ready to host the
games??? Has the government been able to fulfill the expectations of
the masses???
Of great concern the Answer is ‘NO’. According to M.S Gill, ‘when
he took over the 3 main stadiums, the work had’nt even started, until
2008.’
Sheila dixit states a cause to be ‘nervous.’ The biggest challenge for
them is to host the games completing all facilities on time. Thus, for
this reason the government is no doubt stressed.
The present scenario of Delhi, the host capital is no doubt alarming. Work is not
being completed on time, projects are lying pending, people are feeling against
the government.
Thus, according to the present situation it can be said that the commonwealth
games in present has shaken the Indian economy to a great extent. The nation is in
a state of run, to host and complete the games on time.
The future scenario may be of help to the nation as the various industries can be
given a boom, but, at present the government actually needs to buck up so that no
hindrance is caused to the name of the nation.
