OBJECTIVES

At the end of 1 hour discussion, atleast 75%

of the students are expected to:
1. Subtract polynomials; and
2. Write a short essay about the video shown.
 To subtract polynomials, just add the
opposite of the subtrahend.

4𝑥 + 5𝑥 − (2𝑥 − 3𝑥)
Subtrahend
 First,change the sign of the
subtrahend.
 Proceed to addition of polynomials,

4𝑥 + 5𝑥 − (2𝑥 − 3𝑥)

4𝑥 + 5𝑥 + (−2𝑥 + 3𝑥)
Example:

1.) 14𝑥 − (−4𝑥)

= 14𝑥 + 4𝑥
= 18𝑥
2.) 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 − (4𝑥 − 2𝑦)
= 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 + (−4𝑥 + 2𝑦)
= −𝑥 + 6𝑦
3.) −20𝑎 + 16𝑏 + 2 − (𝑎 − 3𝑏)
= −20𝑎 + 16𝑏 + 2 + (−𝑎 + 3𝑏)
= −21𝑎 + 19𝑏 + 2
4.) 30𝑐 − 70𝑑 + 20𝑧 − (40𝑐 − 50𝑑 + 30𝑧)
= 30𝑐 − 70𝑑 + 20𝑧 + (−40𝑐 + 50𝑑 − 30𝑧)
= −10c − 20d − 10z
5.) 2𝑥𝑦 + 6𝑦 − 8 2𝑥𝑦 + 6𝑦 − 8
