OBJECTIVES

At the end of this presentation, you will

be able to:

• Derive the equation of the Circle

Identify the radius and the center of the circle

using the equation

Plot a circle in the Coordinate System using

the equation
DEFINITION OF A CIRCLE

CIRLE is the locus of all points equidistant

from a central point.
DERIVATION OF THE
EQUATION OF THE CIRCLE

(x,k)

Pythagorean Theorem: c2 = a2 + b2
Where: c=r
a=x-h
b=y-k
Therefore: r2 = (x-h)2 + (y-k)2
EQUATION OF A CIRCLE –
CENTER AT ORIGIN

Using the standard equation:

r2 = (x - h)2 + (y - k)2
r2= (x - 0)2 + (y - 0)2
Therefore: r2 = x2 + y2
THE GENERAL EQUATION

Using the Standard Equation:

r2 = (x - h)2 + (y - k)2
r2 = x2 – 2hx + h2 + y2 -2ky + k2
r2 = x2 – 2hx + h2 + y2 -2ky + k2
r2 = x2 + y2 – 2hx – 2ky + h2 + k2
0 = x2 + y2 – 2hx – 2ky + h2 + k2- r2
0 = x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F

General Equation: x2 + y2 + Dx + Ey + F = 0
PLOTTING A CIRCLE IN A
COORDINATE SYSTEM

Plot the figure in the coordinate plane and

provide the standard equation of the
following:

1. (-4, -5), r = 4
r2 = (x-h)2 + (y-k)2
(4)2 = (x+4)2 + (y+5)2
16 = (x+4)2 + (y+5)2

2. (8, 2) r = 3
r2 = (x-h)2 + (y-k)2
(3)2 = (x-8)2 + (y+2)2
9 = (x-8)2 + (y+2)2
PLOTTING A CIRCLE IN A
COORDINATE SYSTEM

Finding the center and the radius of a

circle. Given the standard equation:

(x-2)2 + (y-4)2 = 25
(x-2)2 + (y-4)2 = 5; since r2 = 25, r = 5
x-2=0 y -4=0
x=2 y=4

Therefore: Center of the circle is at (2, 4) with

the radius of 5.
PLOTTING A CIRCLE IN A
COORDINATE SYSTEM
General equation to standard form to find the center of
the circle and radius. Given the general equation:

x2 + y2 -6x + 10y + 18 = 0
x2 + y2 -6x + 10y = -18
x2 -6x __ + y2 + 10y___ = -18
(x2 -6x + 9) + (y2 + 10y + 25) = -18 + 9 + 25
(x - 3)2 + (y + 5)2 = 16

(x - 3)2 + (y + 5)2 = 4, since: r2 = 16, r = 4

x-3=0 y+5=0
x =3 y = -5

Therefore: Center of the circle is at (3, -5) with the

radius of 4.
CONVERT STANDARD EQUATION
TO GENERAL EQUATION

Using the standard equation: r2 = (x-h)2 + (y-k)2

Substitute: (7)2 = (x-4)2 + (y+1)2

Expand: 49 = x2 - 8x + 16 + y2 + 2y + 1
Rearrange: 49 = x2 + y2 - 8x + 2y + 16 + 1
0 = x2 + y2 - 8x + 2y + 16 + 1 – 49
0 = x2 + y2 - 8x + 2y - 32

General Equation: x2 + y2 - 8x + 2y - 32 = 0
ASSESSMENT

Plot me: Determine the center and the radius of the

circle. Graph each circle in a coordinate plane.
1. x2+ y2 = 100
2. (x+7)2 + (y+1)2 = 49

Turn me into a General: Write each equation of a

circle into a general form.
1. (x-5)2 + (y-5)2 = 49
2. x2 + (y+2)2 = 36

Transform the equation into standard form:

1. x2 +y2 -2x-8y-47=0
ASSIGNMENT

Find the General Equation:

A line passes through the center of a circle and
intersects it at point (2,3) & (8,7). What is the general
equation of the circle?

Search and write down the general equation of the

following:
1. Parabola
2. Hyperbola
3. Ellipse
