NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Q. What is a Pebble Bed Reactor?

A. It consist mainly three components

• Reactor
• Pebbles
• Coolant
Reactor

• The Nuclear Reaction takes place within the

“REACTOR VESSEL” which is a vertical steel
pressure enclosure.
• The enclosure is lined up with a layer of graphite bricks
Pebbles
Coolant

• Helium Replaces Water

• It is chemically inert
• It does not absorb neutrons
• Non-combustion
• Non-radioactive
• No chances of steam explosion
• Waste is less hazardous
• Different Fuel pebbles can be used in same reactor
• Fuel pebbles cannot be used as source to nuclear weapons.

(MANY MORE)
ADVANTAGES
•Flow of pebbles in reactor

•PEBBLE-As a fuel, moderator and controller

•No phase change of moderator and coolant

•The Working Fluid never becomes Radioactive.

•It is inherently safe & places a neutral limit on power

production.

• Operates at high temperature

ADVANTAGES

• No chances of steam explosion

• Waste is less hazardous
• Different Fuel pebbles can be used in same reactor
• Fuel pebbles cannot be used as source to nuclear weapons.
DISADVANTAGES

• No Containment Building
• Fuel pebbles are risky
• Pebble Design
• Large amount of Waste
• Fuel Handling.
CONCLUSION

• It can be considered as one of the optimum and

safer solutions for our energy requirement.

• Pebble Bed reactors are completely safe than the

previous generation nuclear reactors. Therefore, they
can be used as a potential source for delivering power
to us!
