Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach is probably one of the

most famous composers to have ever lived,
also being regarded as one of the best.
He was born on 31 March 1685 and died on 28
July 1750, making him a Baroque composer.
He was born in Eisenach, Germany.
Bach was born into a musical family. His father
directed the town musicians and all of his
uncles were professionals. It is believed that his
father taught him how to play the violin and
music theory. After his father’s death, Bach
moved in with his eldest brother who continued
to teach him.
Bach was active in the Baroque period and his
music matches the meaning of Baroque.
Baroque basically means ‘elaborate
ornamentation’ which pretty much describes
Bach’s style.
Fugues
Over his career Bach was famous for writing
fugues, especially on the organ. He would take
a simple melody and then gradually layer them
up. It was this simplicity that made Bach’s work
so enthralling.
Toccata and Fugue in D minor
This is probably one of Bach’s most famous
pieces.
Personally, I like this piece as I feel that Bach
effectively uses fugues to enhance the piece
and make it more interesting.
I also like the dark mood the minor key creates.
Other features
Bach regularly used counterpoint.
He was also very strict in his rhythms. So strict
that they were often described as
mathematical.
His preludes were formed from very basic
motives and are very repetitive.
