SCHEDULING FUNDAMENTALS

Process of determining the inter-relationship of

associated timings of operations.
• Determine start and finish
• Assembly of activities for completion time
• Logical flow
• Reflection of Plan
• Uncover flaws in plan
• Appropriate revisions in plan
SCHEDULING FUNDAMENTALS

• Time phased plan

• Performance measure/control
• Required completion
• Qualities of Schedule
– Systematic and scientific unlike planning
– Mechanical approach
– Programming for complex schedule computation
– Structured schedules
– Trained and experience schedulers
SCHEDULING PROCESS

• Schedule development: Theoretical calculations

of timings without resource consideration/other
constraints
• Schedule Analysis: Consideration resources,
deadlines, constraints, shortcomings
• Schedule Adjustment: Integration/revision
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Computer based scheduling
• Project Scheduling
• Iterative nature
• Computer aided – perform well
– Primavera, Microsoft Project
• Manual techniques - awkward and useless
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Input to Project Scheduling (Project Time Plan)
• Work Breakdown structure (WBS)
• Activity list
• Activity duration
• Activity logic relationship
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Input to Project Scheduling (Project Time Plan)
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
A deliverable-oriented grouping of project elements that
organizes and defines the total scope of the project. It
Identifies the project elements that will need resources.
– Sublevel or group of similar activities
– Parent Child Activity relationship
– Break till activities are
• Identifiable
• Manageable
• Cost able
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Input to Project Scheduling (Project Time Plan)
Activity
An element of work performed during the course of
a project.
OR
An amount of work that can be identified so that
we know what it involves and can recognize, when
it starts and finishes.
– An activity normally has an expected duration, an
expected cost, and expected resource requirements.
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Input to Project Scheduling (Project Time Plan)
Activity Duration
• It is forecasted by any of the several means, including:
1. Check Past Records.
2. Check Standards and / or cost guides, if available.
3. Ask the workers, who will do it
4. Make an educated guess

• Any time units may be allotted to activity durations like

days, hours, weeks, months, shifts, etc.
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Input to Project Scheduling (Project Time Plan)
Activity Logic relationship
• Match the flow
• Structure of Building
Foundation  Plinth Beam  Column Beam Slab
• Sub Activity
– For Slab (Next slide)
Formwork  Reinforcement  Concrete
– For Column
Reinforcement  Formwork  Concrete

Techniques for Project scheduling

NON NETWORK NETWORK

• BAR CHART • Critical Path Method

• GANTT CHART (CPM),
• Program Evaluation
and Review Technique
(PERT)
SCHEDULING PROCESS
Output from Project Schedule
Project Schedule
• Time Table of Activities
STEPS IN CONSTRUCTION SCHEDULING

• Splitting of the project into work activities

• Determining logic relationships/interrelationships
between activities.
• Construction of Network Diagrams.
• Assigning durations to work activities.
• CPM Calculations resulting in start times, finish
times and float calculations of activities.
• Marking of critical Path
• Construction of Bar Charts / Time phased
diagrams.
STORY
BUILD A HOUSE
PHASES OF HOUSE CONSTRUCTION

1. Feasibility
2. Design
Architecture  Structural  Electrical  Plumbing
3. Construction
Mobilization  Layout  Excavation  Foundation  Block
Masonry
4. Finishing
Paint (Outer/Inner)  Wood Work  Glass Work
5. Electrical
6. Plumbing
7. Handover
