Introduction

 Vessel in which a mixture of well fluids that aren't soluble

to each other are segregated.
 A cylindrical or spherical vessel used to separate oil, gas
and water from the total fluid stream produced by a well.

 Major contribution in processing of oil and gas.

Separation Factors
Density Difference
Retention Time (The amount of time a liquid stays in a
vessel. The retention time assures that equilibrium between the
liquid and gas has been reached at separator pressure. The retention
time in a separator is determined by dividing the liquid volume
inside the vessel by the liquid flow rate. The retention time usually
varies between 30 seconds and 3 minutes.
Coalescing Area (The process of droplet growth as small
drops merge together when they come in contact. If this occurs
repeatedly, a continuous liquid phase forms)
Operating Pressure
Type Fluid Flow ( Laminar or Turbulent flow)
Separator Types & Classification

 Vertical Separator
Low to intermediate gas oil ratios (GOR).
 Horizontal Separator
Higher gas oil ratios (GOR).
 Classified into two-phase and three-phase
separators
Separation Mechanism

3-Phase Horizontal Separator

Internal Parts
 Baffle Plate ( inlet diverter): The sudden change in
direction and velocity will disengage the gas from the
liquid.
 Mist Extractor: A device used to collect small liquid
droplets (moisture or hydrocarbons) from the gas stream
before it leaves the separator)
 Oil Bucket
 Weir Plate (It maintains the oil level in the vessel)
 Vortex Breaker (to prevent gas carryunder at outlet of
liquid phase)
 Level Control Valves (LCV)
 INLET DEFLECTOR : It separates the gas stream
from the bulk fluid
 WAVE BREAKER : It is used to limit the wave
propagation
 DEFORMING PLATE : It reduces the foaming at
the gas liquid interface
 VORTEX BREAKER : It decreases the vortex flow
when the liquid control valve is open.
 MIST EXTRATOR : It is primarily used to
eliminate the mist or smog from the gases.
Importance

 To recover valuable products

 Improve product purity
 Reduce emissions
 Protect downstream equipment
