ECE 427 – Industrial

Electronics
• Introduction to Transducers
• Different Types of
Transducers
• Practical Application of
transducers

Course Outline
Introduction to
Transducers,
Actuators and
What is a transducers?
• A transducer is a device which transforms a
non-electrical physical quantity (i.e.
temperature, sound or light) into an electrical
signal (i.e. voltage, current, capacity…)
• (another definition) A transducer is any
device which converts one form of energy
into another.
What is an Actuator?
• An actuator is a device that actuates or
moves something.
• An actuator uses energy to provide motion.
• Therefore, an actuator is a specific type of a
transducer
What is a Sensor
• A sensor is a device that receives and
responds to a signal.
• This signal must be produced by some type of
energy, such as heat, light, motion, or
chemical reaction.
• Therefore, a sensor is also a specific type of
transducers
