author best known for his
novel Things Fall Apart (the
most widely read book in
modern African Literature)
• Born Albert Chinualumogu
Achebe on 11/16/1930
• He has published many short
stories, novels, essays, and
children’s books
Background Info
• As a young man, Achebe had negative views
about Africa.
• He considered traditional religions and stories
to be “primitive” and that “good” literature
came from Europeans.
Importance of his Work
He is considered to be one of the greatest
African novelists, he wanted to tell stories from
an African point of view. He wanted to:
• Destroy racist myths about Africa
• Show that African people were not “savages”
with “no culture”

himself a different order
of reality from that which
is given to him”
