Material and Energy Balance
Material Balance

Assuming two waste gas stream A and B

MA and MB: Gas flow rate (kg/hr)
MF: Combination of the two waste gas stream
X: Mass gas fraction

U: internal energy
Z: Potential energy
K: Kinetic Energy
Process Removal
Gas Pollutant Control
Separation of gaseous pollutants is based on
physical/chemical properties of each gas:
Acid/Basic solubility: used in Absorption. acid and basic gases:
SOx, HCl, NH3, CO2. Opposite Scrubbing Agent.
Polarity: : used in Adsorption (VOCs) and sometimes absorption
Vapor Pressure: used in Condensation (VOCs) and Adsorption.
Enthalpy/Entropy/Thermodynamic properties: used in
Combustion and Incineration (VOCs, NOx, CO)
Chemical Reaction/Kinetic Properties: used in Catalysis (NOx,
VOCs), Chemical Absorption/Adsorption (NOx, CO2 and
Incineration (VOCs, PCDD/PCDFs…).
