Disabilities Act

The Americans with Disabilities Act is
a civil rights law signed by George. H.
W. Bush that prohibits discrimination
based on disability

● The ADA was passed by Congress on


July 26th, 1990 and includes five titles

● IDEA defines Assistive Technology


as any item, piece of equipment,
software program, or product
system that is used to increase,
maintain, or improve the
functional capabilities of persons
with disabilities

How does captioning add accessibility to

● Using commands on Youtube videos and adding


captioning, audio tracks, subtitles, etc. embeds
them into the video so that people with disabilities
can hear or use closed captioning to read the
screen

hard of hearing to read the screen instead of using the audio

● The alt tag is an HTML attribute used


in HTML documents and XHTML
documents
● Adding an alt tag to an image will
provide a text alternative for screen
reader use

● Blinking and Flashing content should


be avoided because it can be
distracting and hard to read

How does it help students with
disabilities?

● The Sip-and-Puff technology assists people with


disabilities by sending signals to a device using
air pressure by inhaling or exhaling onto a
straw, wand, or tube.

by people with disabilities who don’t
have the use of their hands.
● Sip-and-Puff technology will help
students with disabilities by allowing
them to connect to a device and move
their wheelchair or control other

into a straw.

● The Read & Write browser adds accessibility to web


pages, documents, files, etc.
● Read & Write was created to make reading and
writing easier for people with disabilities, such as
dyslexia.
