Autonomous Region in

Muslim Mindanao
(ARMM)
-ARMM is composed of five provinces:

Provinces Capitals
1.Basilan Isabela City
2. Lanao Del Sur Marawi City
3.Maguindanao Shariff Aguak
4.Sulu Jolo
5.Tawi-tawi Bongao/Panglima
Sugala
- It is the only region in the Philippines that has its
own government.

- RA 6734 (Organic Act) on year 1989, August the


1 was the day the Autonomous Region in
Muslim Mindanao was created. But the official
inauguration of ARMM was on last November
6, 1990 in Cotabato City.
Basilan

-Basilan is derive from its iron ore deposits.

-Back then,Tausug warriors and slave- traders


from Sulu came to Taguima to buy high
quality magnetic ores which they used for
making blades, knives and swords.
-Basilan is the homeland of the Yakans, they are
peaceful and lovable people. They are known
for their colorful hand woven clothes with
complex geometric designing.

- Yakan’s uses vivid colors. The style of living is


their main theme in creating hand woven
materials.
Lanao Del Sur
- Lanao Del Sur the land of Maranaos, “ land of the
Lake”.
- Lanao Lake is the second largest and deepest in the
Philippines.

- Maranaos are known for making sophisticated


artworks, weaving ,wood and metal work crafts.

- Torogan is a Maranao house which is characterized


as a antique royal high roof house with curved
designs.
Maguindanao
- Maguindanaos are called “ the people of the flood
plain. This is because they live in the marshy portion
of Cotabato.

- Another reason why they are called “ the people of


flood plain” is because their area has been flooded
many times a year.

- Maguindanao people like other provinces in ARMM


region also give importance on weaving.
- One of the famous weaving made by them is
called “Inaul”.

- It is a hand woven malong that can be used by


both men and women.

- They also create and used brass instruments


like kulintang(small group of gongs),
agong(two gongs struck by a bamboo stick),
gandingan(set of four hanging gongs), etc.
Sulu
- Tausug are the people of Sulu, in which they are
called “ the people of the current”.They are
sailors, divers of pearls and traders.

- Like Maguindanaos they are also incorporating


musical instrument in their living.

- They also got interested on weaving mats using


cotton and silk with beautiful geometric
designs.
Tawi-tawi
- Its name “Tawi-tawi” is derived from a malay
word “jaui-jaui” which means far away.

- Tawi-tawi is the homeland of Samals and


Bajaos, they are known as “ Sea Gypsies”.

- Their livelihood is centered to the sea, they


fish and live in houses build in sea.
- Most of their festivities are related to their
livelihood.

*Seaweed Festival(also called as Agal-agal


festival) is a festivity of giving thanks for its
good harvest. Celebrated every 4th week of
september wherein they also showcase their
economical potential, culture and tradition.
