Human beings occupy a central place in all sorts of
industrial activities and any attempt to run them
efficiently, smoothly, without any strife or tensions is
doomed to failure if due consideration is not given to this
factor……
……It is exactly at this, the Industrial psychology aims at
broadly
... It tries to understand human problems that have arisen
as a result of tremendous expansion of industry (in all
types of industries) in the last few decades

Definition – Industrial Psychology
IP is the application and extension of
psychological facts and principles of the
problems concerning human beings working or
operating in industrial, business, service and
research organizations

 Industry includes all sorts of operating


organizations-business, educational,
governmental and religious

When Industrial Psychology was
thought of?????????
In December 1901,
Dr Walter Dill Scott in USA spoke on the
possibility of application of psychological
principles to the field of advertising
But
beginning of Industrial Psychology is said to
be in 1913, when Hugo Musterberg published a
book on Psychology and Industrial Efficiency

Psychology is defined as the study of man and
his behaviour with the aid of scientific
methodology

Psychology uses many scientific methods to


collect facts about human behaviour and in its
attempt to understand man-methods like
experimentation, observation method, surveys
of various sorts, field studies, developmental
method, case study method and so on

Experimental Psychology: experimentation as a method of
studying behaviour and discovering principles that govern
behaviour

 Personnel Selection: Selection of employees, executives..developing
instruments of personnel selection
 Personnel Development: Developing means of appraisal of performance for
all, measurement of attitudes, employee counseling for better adjustment
with the environment
 Human Engineering: Suggesting changes, innovations in machines/
technology/ operations/ equipment for greater ease in operation in least
possible human energy
 Productivity Study: activities of lessening worker fatigue, improving work
environmental conditions..light, ventilation, work arrangements etc to
maximize efficiency
