DEFINING LITERACY
 When defining or promoting literacy programs, it is
important to know your parameters.

 NEO Literacy Corps is built on the premise that literacy

is an individual’s ability to read, write, speak, compute
and solve problems.
 Our ultimate goal is to increase educational attainment &
employability for economically disadvantaged
individuals.
COMPARING VARIOUS VIEWPOINTS
 Read the handout with multiple definitions of literacy
from reputable sources.

 Craft your own definition of literacy, thinking about the

following questions:
 Isliteracy a socially mediated concept?
 What is the purpose of NEO Literacy Corps?
 What is the relationship between literacy & poverty?
 How would you measure when someone is “literate” by your
definition?

 We will share a few definitions.

THANK YOU!
