WAYS OF BREAKING UP THE

ULTRASONIC
CELL:

VIBRATION
Prepared by: Aina Doreen N. Delfin, RMT
Ultrasonic vibrations
■ high-frequency sound waves beyond the range of human hearing:
– wave's frequencies above 20000 cycles per second (20khHz)
■Ultrasonic waves can cause bacteria to
cavitate. Cavitation -- formation of a
partial vacuum in a liquid. External

“cold boiling” shock waves

■ “sonication”
■ Bubble collapsing -- sonic energy to mechanical
energy (shock waves; equivalent to several
thousand pressure)
■ Imparts motions to parts of cells which
disintegrate when their kinetic energy content
exceeds the wall strength.
■ An additional factor which increases cell breakage
is the microstreaming which occur near radially
vibrating bubbles of gas caused by the ultrasound.
■ Energy absorbed by cell suspensions is converted
to heat; effective cooling is essential.
