6.1 What are linear equations in
one variable?
The symbol ‘=’is used to show the
relationship between two quantities that
have the same value. The mathematical
sentence that involves equality is known
as equation.
For example, x + 2 = 5 and y – 7 =11
X+5=8 6p+4q=9

3n+1=6n 3h-1=5k

• These equation are linear equation since

the power of the variables is one.
• Among the linear equation, it is found that
the following equation have only one
variable and the power of the variable is
one.

X+5=8 3n+1=6n

• These equations are known as linear

equations in one variable
• These equations are known as linear equations in
one variable.
Power of x is 1

x+5=8

One variable Equality

Example 1
Explain whether each of the following equations
is a linear equation in one variable:
(a) 3x +2=5 (b) p-4q=6
(c) (d)
Solution
a) Yes, because the equation has one variable, x
and the power of x is 1.
b) No, because the equation has two variables,
p and q.
c) Yes, because the equation has one variable, k
and the power of k is 1.
d) No, because the highest power of the
variable y is 2.
How do you form linear equation based on a
given situation and vice-versa?
• Form a linear equation in one variable for
each of the following:

a) Subtract 9 from a number, its remainder is 3.

b) Adrian bought 6 apples which cost sen each
and an oranges which cost RM1. The total
amount that she paid was RM5.
Solution
a) Let the number be :

b) The price of 6 apples = 6×

=6
6 +100 = 500
How do you solve linear equations in one
variable?
• Two block with mass of 6 kg and x kg respectively are
placed on the scales as shown in the diagram.
X kg

6 kg

10 kg

The reading shown by the scale is equal to the total

mass of the blocks. Therefore, the linear equation
formed is .
ow do you solve linear equations in one variab

• If we replace the x kg block with a block of a

mass of 4 kg, the reading on the scales is
equal to 10 kg. the shows that 4 is a numerical
value that satisfies the equation .
This numerical is known as the solution of the
equation .
• The solution of linear equation is the
numerical that satisfies the equation.
How do you solve linear equations in one
variable?
• The linear equation in one variable can be
solved by using three methods as follows:
– Trial and improvement method
– Application of equality concept
– Backtracking method
Example 4

• Solve the linear equation by using
