Main Hall
Haeringwan, the lobby and main building of Korea House, houses Sohwadang
and the folk theater.
Sohwadang is connected with Hwanbyeokru and the place can be used for
buffets, first birthday parties, receptions or a banquet for one's 60th birthday.
The name Garakdang means ‘a place filled with beautiful music'. The three
rooms in Garakdang - Yeongjusil, Bangjangsil and Bongnaesil - are all heated
by ondol, the traditional room-heating system. There is a legend that people
maintain perpetual youth if they have meals in these rooms.
Separate Buildings
There are separate buildings in the beautiful backyard behind the pond and up
the stairs. The names of the buildings are Munhyangru, Nokeumjeong, and
Cheongujeong respectively.
Munhyangru
The name Munhyangru means a 'pavilion where you smell scents'. You can see
the building as you as you step into the backyard of Korea House. There is a
large room that can accommodate 8 people and a small cozy room for 2~4
people. The building has often been used for shooting TV dramas including
'Dinner of Gods'.
Nokeumjeong
The narrow wooden porch attached to the main building adds to the classical
grace and dignity of the house. Nokeumjeong means a 'pavilion where poems
are recited in the thick green trees and the beautiful scenery of the forest'. The
room in the building is good for a meeting of about 10 people.
Cheongujeong
The name of the building means a 'quiet pavilion where only the sound of rain
in the backyard can be heard when it rains'. The beautiful octagonal pavilion is
connected with Nokeumjeong. It is good for a small family meeting of about 12
people. The house has been used for shooting many TV dramas including
'Sikgaek (Houseguest)' and 'Dinner of Gods‘.
Chwiseongwan
Chwiseongwan is a modern composite building where tradition and modernity
coexist and is used for hosting various large and small banquets. The building
was reopened after extending the former Chwiseonru as a multi-purpose
composite center for experiencing traditional culture. It is composed of a
cultural goods exhibition hall, a traditional cultural convention and a royal
kitchen on different floors.
Events like exhibitions, seminars, social gatherings, workshops, education
sessions, awards ceremonies and alumni association meetings are held in the
building.
Traditional Cultural Goods Exhibition Hall
World-class prestigious Korean cultural goods are on the first floor of
Chwiseongwan in Korea House. Creative Korean handicrafts are displayed and
sold mainly to the foreigners who visit Korea House. The exhibition hall is
leading the global promotion of Korean handicrafts while preserving the
traditional crafts culture.
The products displayed include lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl, horn
painting, handicrafts with traditional Korean paper, textile handicrafts, jade
handicrafts, earthenware, varnishing with lacquer and woodcraft, metal craft
and leather craft items. Visitors can purchase the works of the artisans who are
certified as Important Intangible Cultural Properties as well purchasing other
souvenirs. The rare products that can only be purchased at Korea House make
for ideal gifts.
