Self-determination theory

 States that in order to be motivated and


function at optimal level, a set of
psychological needs must be supported.
 These needs are relatedness, competence,
and autonomy.
 Relatedness refers to the connection and
sense of belonging with others. This
connectedness and belonging provides the
required emotional security that individuals
need to actively explore and effectively deal
with their worlds.
Important concepts
 Intrinsic motivation
1. refers to behaviors done in the absence of external
impetus that are inherently interesting and enjoyable.
2. which means they are experienced as emanating from
the self rather than from external sources, and are
accompanied by feelings of curiosity and interest.

 Extrinsic motivation and internalization


1. refers to behaviors performed to obtain some outcome
separable from the activity itself.
2. internalization of extrinsic motivation is essential for
students’ self-initiation and maintained volition for
educational activities that are not inherently interesting or
enjoyable.
Application
 Strategies for enhancing autonomy include
providing choice and meaningful rationales
for learning activities, acknowledging
students’ feelings about those topics, and
minimizing pressure and control.
 Strategies for enhancing competence
include providing effectance relevant, as
opposed to norm-based evaluative, feed
back and optimally challenging tasks.
 Strategies for enhancing relatedness include
conveying warmth, caring, and respect to
students.
APPLICATION IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
TEACHING AND LEARNING BASED ON SELF-
DETERMINATION THEORY
 In self-determination theory the way to
improve the teaching and learning si by
giving the student opportunity to choose of
the task that they can do.
 As in chemical engineering, student need
to complete their integrated project before
end of the semester. The students is giving
the chance to choose their teammates,
title of project and task they can do based
on the subject given. As the student do task
that they mastery at, it will make them more
interested to learn and enhance their self-
determination.
Self Determination in Mathematics
Mathematical discussion allows students to reflect upon math
concepts and understand such concept at a deeper level.
This process of reflection requires a certain amount of
internalization on the part of student.
This internalization is facilitated be meeting the needs of
autonomy, competence and relatedness as advocated be in this
theory.
APPLICATION IN ECONOMIC
TEACHING AND LEARNING BASED ON
SELF DETERMINATION THEORY
 According to intrinsic motivation, teacher needs to
emphasis on encouragement for freedom of learning
based on students’ interest and learning pleasure.
 In economic subjects, teachers can use any
strategies such as confusion, conflict and doubt
about current economic issue to retain the curious
instinct of students.
 Teachers can use game and simulation techniques in
teaching and learning sessions.
 While in extrinsic motivation, teachers need to give
reward such as gifs, praise, high marks for excellents
students to encourage and attract students to study
hard in learning.
APPLICATION SELF DETERMINATION
THEORY IN WEB DESIGN

The teacher encourage student to have interest in


system management subject to be able to start
programming any application or program.

This is because strong sense of relatedness better


positions students to take on challenge, set positive
goals, and establish high expectations
