1776 – Alexander Hamilton is named captain of
artillery company.
1964 – Jack Ruby is sentenced to death by the
electric chair for killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the
accused assassin of JFK.

Early 1900s – kids and teens would most likely
be working on farms or in factories, not in
school.
Depression of 1893 – U.S. government stopped
using silver to back up dollars and would only
use gold.
The “Silver State’s” economy collapsed.

Agriculture lost their markets, farmers
couldn’t pay back loans.
Homeless and jobless camped in Denver

miners, farmers and factory workers.

City Hall War
The fired men refused to give up their jobs
and barricaded themselves in Denver City
Hall. Police and firemen joined them.
Waite called out the state militia, which
surrounded City Hall.

Waite ended up withdrawing his troops and the
issue went to the courts instead.
1894 – Colorado become the 2nd state to allow
women to vote in state elections.
Women ran businesses, worked for better
schools, churches and health care, fought
against corruption, ran newspapers and in
1894 three women were elected to the state
legislature.

1906 – Holly Bloomer Girls defeat the men’s
team Lamar Cardinals in basketball with a score
of 7-2.

Miners often worked long hours for low pay.
Miners formed labor unions to achieve better
working conditions.

Governor Peabody sent the Colorado National
Guard to protect miners and strikebreakers,
illegally arrested strikers and shipped some to
Kansas.
The miners’ strike ended with no reforms.

Peabody – Republican incumbent is defeated
Alva B. Adams – Democrat, accused by
Republican controlled supreme court and
legislature of illegal votes.
Democrats persuaded Republicans to replace
Peabody with his lieutenant governor, Jesse F.
McDonald.
