Definition of seepage
Another important area of soil mechanics is seepage.
Seepage is the movement of water into the soil vertical and
horizontally (side) through a porous substance from sources.
Quicksand
Quicksand is consisting of fine granular
material (such as sand, silt or clay),
and water.
Quicksand condition is a condition of flow
in which vertical upward seepage flow
causes floating condition of particles in
cohesion less soils such as sands and fine
gravels due to loss of shear strength in
between particles. quick sand is not a type
of sand.
If the seepage pressure becomes equal to the
pressure due to submerged weight of soil,
the effective pressure is reduced to zero. in
this condition a cohesionless soil loses all its
shear strength and the soil particles have a
tendency to move up in the direction of
flow.
