Unit 8 questions

1. The oxidation of ammonia is

4 NH3(g) + 5 O2(g)  4 NO(g) + 6 H2O (g)
Calculate the standard enthalpy change for this reaction. Given:
Compound ΔH f ( kJ mol– 1)
NH3 (g) – 46.2
NO (g) + 90.4
H2O (g) – 242
Answer:
4 NH3(g) + 5 O2(g)  4 NO(g) + 6 H2O (g)
4(- 46.2) 4(+90.4) 6(- 242)

2N2 (g) + 6H2 (g) + 2O2 (g) + O2 (g)

ΔHr = 4(+46.2) + 4(+90.4) + 6(- 242)

= - 905.6 kJ mol –1
Or
ΔHr = ΔHproduct - ΔHreactant [ not for combustion ]
= [4(+90.4) + 6(- 242) ] – [4(- 46.2) ]
= - 905.6 kJ mol –1
