OVERVIEW OF SOLAR ENERGY
 Solar energy, as the
name implies uses the
sun energy to harness
energy in some
other useful forms.
Radiant light and heat
from the sun, has been
harnessed by humans
since ancient times using
a range of ever-evolving
technologies.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF YOUR
HOME
Have you made the low cost, easy to
implement changes that can reduce
your energy bill ?
Yes , the best approach is constructing
SOLAR BUILDING
A solar building, by definition, incorporates
and builds upon energy efficient attributes,
in its aggressive use and/or mitigation of
environmental resources and conditions.
REQUIREMENTS OF SOLAR BUILDING
Techniques used for construction such as
 Active solar techniques : these include the photovoltaic
panels & thermal collectors ………
 Passive solar techniques : these include orienting a
building to the sun& selecting other materials…….
 Material approaches such as
 Solar panels(photovoltaic module or photo voltaic
panel).
 Thermal mass.
 Thermal skin.
 Composite.
What is photovoltaic technology ?
 Solar PV technology uses arrays of solar cells to receive
sunlight and convert the same into electricity.
 A SOLAR PANEL (photovoltaic module or photovoltaic panel) IS
A PACKAGED INTERCONNECTED ASSEMBLY OF SOLAR CELLS,
ALSO KNOWN AS PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS.

Solar cell
How Solar Panels Produce Electricity ?
PV Solar panels do not necessarily need direct sunlight,
they can function in daylight.
A PV cell is made up of one or more layers of semi –
conducting material, which is normally silicon.
PV cells also made by other materials such as
 mono crystalline
 poly crystalline
 amorphous and
 thin – film varieties.

Passive Solar Building Materials
THERMAL MASS:  Materials of high thermal capacity
and density are often used for both their characteristics
to impede heat flow as well as storage of heat or cold.

THERMAL SKIN: Typical materials include highly insulated

heavier frame construction.

 COMPOSITE: The building envelope is a thermal "skin"

approach with much of the building's interior elements
of floors ; walls ; and structural and decorative elements
providing the storage for natural heating and cooling.

These Should Be Remembered While
Construction:
 WINTER ORIENTATION: Sun is generally south of us.

 SUMMER ORIENTATION: Minimization of east and west

facades should be adopted &increasing the south facing
facade.

 THERMAL TRANSITIONS: In areas of temperature

extremes (severe cold or severe heat), thermal
decompression should be considered.
COST V/S POWER GENERATION
 AVERAGE SOLAR OUTPUT POWER PER SQ.FT IS 10.6
WATTS.

 FOR PRODUCING 1 KW POWER REQUIRES 1 lakh-TO

1.5 lakh.

 400 SQ.FT TO 800 SQ.FT OF INSTALLED AREA

PRODUCES 4 KW TO 8 KW OF POWER.

 SOLAR PANELS COST IS BEING DECREASING DAY BY

DAY.
PROS&CONS OF SOLAR BUILDINGS
 PROS:
• Solar energy is abundant in regions that have the largest
number of people living off grid.
• Passive solar building  design and zero energy buildings  are
demonstrating significant energy bill reduction.
• Distributed point-of-use photovoltaic systems eliminate
expensive long-distance electric power transmission losses.
 Cons:
o Solar heat and electricity are not available at night and may be
unavailable because of weather conditions.
o Solar cells produce DC which must be converted to AC .
o Solar electricity is currently more expensive than grid
electricity.
SOLAR ENERGY IN INDIA
With about 300 clear sunny days in a year, India's
theoretical solar power reception, just on its land area, is
about 5 PWh/year.
35,000 km² area of the Thar desert has been set aside
for solar power projects, sufficient to generate 700 to
2,100 GW.
The daily average solar energy incident over India varies
from 4 to 7 kWh/m2 .
