One of the goals of the network is to offer a different
perspective to many foreign media stereotypes about Africa.
MY EXPERIENCE
During the program I was in the engineering department
which was sectioned into
 Electrical Section
 Outside Broadcasting Section
 Ingest/ Link room Section
 Maintenance Section
ELECTRICAL SECTION
I was involved in the soldering and de-soldering of some
connectors to its cables like; I connector, F connector, BNC
connector, XLR connector, power connectors
ELECTRICAL SECTION
Electrical tools I used includes;
• Plier
• Soldering Iron
• Spanner
• Screw Drivers
• Tweezers
• Wire Strippers
OUTSIDE BROADCASTING VAN
I was taught on how to deploy and stow an outside
broadcasting van (OB) during transmission
OUTSIDE BROADCASTING VAN
OUTSIDE BROADCASTING VAN
The following are the Steps
in which OB van can be
Deployed and Stowed;
• Switch on the circuit
breaker inside the
vehicle after which the
generator had been put
on.
• HPA is the first equipment
that will be put on from
the circuit breaker and
all other equipment
OUTSIDE BROADCASTING VAN
• Setting the parameters on
antenna control unit; press
the enter key and it will take
to you to some options
where you will find deploy.
• Click on deploy and the
dish will automatically
deploy gradually until it
reaches the maximum
elevation,
• Begin to pan the azimuth till
the signal is achieved
OUTSIDE BROADCASTING VAN
INGEST/ LINK ROOM SECTION
• Links Racks for ingesting
various feeds from News
Agencies, DSNGs and
Flyways Downlink, via
portable 3G Backpack units
• Live 3G Portable Video Unit
Receiving Server
• Tape and Tapeless Card
Based VTRs, Hard Disk based
Record and Playout
Devices, IRDs, Decoder
INGEST/ LINK ROOM SECTION
• Monitoring via two 50-inch
Displays driven by 32 input HD
Multi-viewer
• Professional Broadcast video and
audio monitoring devices
MAINTENANCE SECTION
• I was actively involved in the replacement of burnt fuses
and spoilt bulb in the studio, offices, security post, canteen.
• Rolling of audio and video cables to its normal position after
used.
• Changing over from Ikeja Electricity to generator during
power failure or vice versa.
• Cleaning of the outside broadcasting van before and after
transmission had been carried out successfully.
RECOMMENDATIONS
In as much as the training was beneficial to me I still
recommend that some factors be put into consideration for
the SIWES to be a better program;
• I recommend that schools engineering workshop should be
better equipped so that they can have a lot of equipment
which will better help the student in their practical
experience.
• I recommend the school should also assist in getting
industrial attachment for student to avoid starting the
training late
CONCLUSION
My experience during the period of industrial attachment was
an enlightening one. The SIWES scheme is indeed an
innovative concept and looking back I feel honored to have
worked at CBS I got to perform work relating to practical
application of what I had learnt in the classroom and even
beyond. It was a bit of a challenge the first few weeks and I
really thank Almighty God that I was privileged to be given
the chance to learn in CBS
