2018 Case Study:

Contus and Mobile App Integration into

the NFL Fan Experience

Efe Edevbie

Current Landscape
● In 2017, Flurry estimated Americans spend roughly 5
hours a day on their mobile devices, a 20% increase from
2015. 92% of this time is spent within mobile apps, but
interestingly enough, only 2% within “sports” apps1
● According to 2015 data provided by Accenture, 87% of
consumers use a second screen when watching TV2
● The question I ask: How can teams and leagues better utilize
this mobile device phenomena to drive engagement?

Contus
● A full-service mobile application development company
○ Has worked with companies ranging from Hyundai to JCB
(construction/waste equipment manufacturer)
● Services range from mobile commerce to instant
messaging to cloud solutions
● Potential to work with leagues like the NFL to launch a
fan-focused mobile app series
Activation #1: At-Stadium
Experiential App
● Contus Bot and Stadium Inquiry System
○ Artificial Bot would be able to engage in conversation about the
location of bathrooms/concessions, line estimates, post-game
traffic updates, etc.
● At-seat food order/delivery component (M-Comm)
Activation #2: At-Home Game
Experiential App
● Live Next Gen Stats insight component
○ Contus is a technology partner with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
— the creator of the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system
● Pre-game Next Gen Stats overview of star players for
both teams
Activation #3: NFL Special Events
Experiential App
● For driving engagement behind the Combine, NFL Draft,
Pro Bowl, Super Bowl, and other NFL special events
● Temporary Live Chat Forums powered by Contus Fly
○ Moderated feed for special topics
Final Recommendation
● I would recommend the NFL to pursue a partnership with
Contus and release a series of apps to better capitalize on
the recent mobile device phenomena in order to drive fan
engagement
