P13: Sketch a piecewise function.
A piecewise function is made of
exactly what it says: Pieces.

Each of the pieces is a function,

and the piecewise function tells
you where to graph it.
P13: Sketch a piecewise function.
To learn piecewise functions, the
best idea is to practice. Here are
some examples.

P14: Determine the zeroes (roots) of
a function.
The zeroes (or roots) of a
function are the points where it
intersects the x-axis. It is
analogous to the y-intercept, b.
P14: Determine the zeroes (roots) of
a function.
To find the zeroes of a function,
set the function equal to zero!

Then solve the equation.

P14: Determine the zeroes (roots) of
a function.
•The
  last screen shows that this
zero is approximately x = -2.33.
P15: Compare and contrast rates of
change graphically.
Recall from Algebra that a rate
of change is just the definition of
slope. How fast is x changing
compared to how fast y is
changing? ∆y/∆x

To compare rates of change,

compare slopes.
P15: Compare and contrast rates of
change graphically.
Sometimes, graphs will be
shown without numerical values.
You can still compare the slopes
by looking at the steepness of
the line.
• A shallow line has a smaller
slope than a steep line.
• A positive slope is always
greater than a negative one.
• Zero slopes are flat.
