The FAMILY
• -oldest and most basic in a social institution
• -usually formed by marriage
• -is a socially recognized unit of people related to each other by
kinship
• -major concern is to prepare a child for his adult place in
society.
The FILIPINO FAMILY
-Monogamous
-provides security from the necessity of living
-generally, there is love, cooperation, respect and justice and
above all, there is God whom they respect and believe.

ROLES OF FAMILY MEMBERS


Father – breadwinner and head. He must support his wife and
children
Mother – treasurer, housekeeper and the heart. Looks after her
children’s welfare
Children – acknowledge the authority of the home. Children’s
right involves having education, proper care and moral training.
• Authority is simply not based on sex but on age.
• Grandparents shall be consulted by all members of the family
on all important family questions.
• Relationship between grandparens and grandchildren is often
very close.
FUNCTIONS of the FILIPINO FAMILY
1. The family regulates sexual behavior and is the unit for
reproduction.
2. The family performs the function of biological maintenance.
3. The family is the chief agency in socializing the child.
4. The family gives the members its status.
5. The family is an important mechanism for social control.
6. The family is an important economic unit.
7. The family has an educational function.
8. The family has a recreational function.
9. The family has a religious function.
10. The family has political function.
IMPORTANCE of the FAMILY
1. The strong or weak mental and physical aspects of the
organism inherited rom the parents can be developed in the
family.
2. The child learns the meaning of social responsibility and
cooperation.
3. The transmitter of culture.
4. The family serves as a model for the establishment of
another family.
PROBLEMS CONFRONTING THE
FILIPINO FAMILY
1. Gambling
2. The movies
3. Lack of adequate preparation for married life.
4. Imprudent choice in marriage
5. The effects of city life
6. The practice of birth control and abortion
7. The practice of divorce legal sepration

1. Give yourself to your family
