EDUCATION AND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

● AMERICA’S GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES WAS THE INTRODUCTION OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.
● In contrast to the spanish system of education, it was open to all.
● Public schools were also secular in orientation.
● The church had nothing to do with the public school system.
● The first american teachers were american soldiers
● The american teachers were more successful in the campaign to educate the filipinos.
● In 1904, the american colonial government in the philippines was able to send the first group of
filipino pensionados or scholars to the united states
● Overall, the public school system increased the number of philipinos
Public Health and Welfare

● Next to education as america’s greatest achievement in the philippines was the improvement of the public health
and welfare
● Before 1900, filipinos suffered from ravages of smallpox, dysentery,tuberculosis,cholera,malaria, and other
deadly diseases which killed thousands of people every year.
● Public health and sanitation were very poor during the spanish regime.
● They became worse during the revolution and the philippine- american war.
● The american authorities immediately set to work to control the spread of deadly diseases.
● In 1901, the americans created the board of public health, which later on became a bureau
● Its duties were to instruct the people in hygiene and sanitation and to combat the people's ignorance and
superstition which were the greatest enemies of medicine and public health.
Improvement in Trade and Industry

● The free trade relations between the philippines and the united states led to artificial prosperity.
● Free trade relations meant that filipino products entering the united states were not taxed and american products
entering the philippines were likewise free of duty
● As a result of this free trade relations
● In 1909, philippine exports amounted to 60.9 million pesos.
● In 1910-1914, it rose to 94.7 million pesos.
● In 1914-1918 it rose to 177.3 million pesos, and in 1925-1930 the exports amounted to 297.9 million pesos.
● In industry,The philippines also prospered under the americans
● Coconut mills, cigar and cigarette factories,rope factories, fishing and fish canning,alcohol distilleries were
established throughout the philippines.
Transport and Communication

● DURING SPANISH PERIOD THE SPANISH PERIOD, BRIDGE AND CULVERTS NUMBERED LESS THAN 3,000.
● IN 1935 THIS NUMBER ROST TO MORE THAN 8,000
● The railway line was likewise extended.in 1903, there was less than 200 kilometers of railway.
Language and Literature

● One of the most lasting influences of the americans in the philippines was the
teaching of the english language and literature to the filipinos
● Within ten years of the american occupation, some filipinos began to write in
english.
● By 1935, many filipino writers in english had distinguished themselves in
poetry, short stories and essays.
NEGATIVE RESULTS OF AMERICAN RULE

● THE PHILIPPINES BECAME DEPENDENT EXCLUSIVELY ON THE UNITED STATES.


● THIS MADE THE PHILIPPINES HELPLESS ECONOMICALLY
● FILIPINO STUDENTS ADMIRE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE UNITED STATES(COLONIAL
MENTALITY)
