EXPLANATION OF TITLE

Bicycle operated washing machine (BOWM)

uses the transfer of energy from a human
source through the use of a bicycle and chain
sprocket system. This concept is most
commonly used for transportation and has
been used to propel bicycles for over a
hundred years. Some development projects
currently transform used bicycles into pedal
powered tools for sustainable development.
PRINCIPLE
It is a machine which generates power
through human pedaling and with the drive
mechanism, converts the pedaling motion
into required rotary motion of the drum. Its
innovation lies in its simple design, use of
inexpensive parts. With the help of chain
sprocket system, the machine achieves the
desire speed for different purposes like
rinsing, drying etc.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES

• Study of bicycle operated washing machine

on the basis of design, construction ,
performance , economy and application.

• Construction of working unit of low cost

washing machine of easily available scrap
parts in daily life.
LITERATURE SURVEY
• The design is ideal for use in the developing countries
as it doesn't require electricity.
• Existing technology for washing clothes do not work
well in the underdeveloped rural areas.
• Difficult transportation due to geographical distance
create problems with imported devices that might
need replacement parts.
• The previous design of this machine used gear trains
and housing which increased its cost and weight.
Hence we will remove these components and will be
adding isolation pads to remove vibrations.
MECHANISM INVOLVED
The assembly of BOWM involves number of steps,
these are started from the frame of cycle which is
the initial part of the structure:
• The cycle frame consist of sprocket, chain, catcher,
pedal, etc.
• With the help of welding, the stand & seat is
welded to the frame of cycle.
• The seat & stand are made of mild steel.
• The pedaling gear is connected to the sprocket
with the help of chain.
• The catcher contains one more sprocket of bigger
diameter. The sprocket 1 & sprocket 2 are
mounted on the same shaft. So the speed of both
the sprockets are same. This big sprocket
transfers this rotary motion to the another
sprocket 3 which is much smaller than this
sprocket 2.
• This sprocket 3 is coupled with washing
chamber (i.e. drum) by using fasteners. In this
type of arrangement, the output is much larger
than the input given in the form of pedaling
motion.
• There are two drums which are mounted on
output shaft; outer & inner drums. The inner
drum contains clothes and water & it rotates in
the same speed that of sprocket. The outer
drum consists of water only & it is stationary.
The inner drum rotates freely without any
obstacle.
• The base frame comprises of this whole
arrangement. The nuts & bolts are used to fix
this assembly and it gives the rigidity to the
whole structure.
CALCULATIONS
• Power required to run the bicycle at 5m/s with torque of 10
Nm is 500 W.
• Taking Diameter of the drum = 20cm
Length of the drum = 55cm
Therefore, to run it at 5m/s, N = 38.19 rpm
• Torque required to run the inner drum is calculated as

• On calculating, T = 2.46 Nm
• Sprockets diameter = 20cm and 6.6 cm
• T1 / T4 = D4 / D1 = 20/6.6
Therefore Torque required at Sprocket 1 is 7.375 Nm.
COST ESTIMATION
S. NO. NAME OF THE COMPONENT QUANTITY ESTIMATED COST
(Rs.)
1. Drum 2 400
2. Iron pipe and stand 1 1500
3. Cycle Frame 1 1500
4. Chain Set 2 800
5. Sprockets 4 1000
6. Nuts and Bolts As per needed 100
7. Manufacturing Cost 1000
Total 6300
FEASIBILITY
• Our research indicated that power required
for washing ,drying and spinning is relatively
low.
• We used chain sprocket mechanism for
increasing the rotational speed.
• Both young and old can generate enough
power to operate this machine.
• Familiarity with pedalling of bicycle will
require no prior experience of operation.
CONCLUSION
The main objective is to provide a product with
an alternative way to wash clothes when then
there is no electricity. It has to be understood
that in rural areas it is a very stressful and
laborious task, so the product which is a pedal
driven machine, satisfies the need of rural
people by giving them an alternative way of
washing clothes which is quick, cost effective
and ecofriendly. The product has zero operating
cost and less effort is required.
