Definition of Constructivism

In Cognitive Views
Constructivism is a learning theory found in psychology which explains how
people might acquire knowledge and learn. It therefore has direct application to
education. The theory suggests that humans construct their knowledge and
meaning from their experiences.
Mathematics Learning in Constructivism Views
To help learning mathematics build concepts, principles of mathematics with its
own ability through the process of internalization so that the principle or
concept was rebuilt and transformation and information obtained into new
concepts or principles.
Characteristics of Constructivism
According Hudojo (in Hermayani, 2008), there are three characteristics that must be
raised in the process of learning mathematics according to the view of
constructivism is as follows:

Learners should be actively involved in learning. Learners


learn math materials meaningfully by working and thinking

New information should be included with the old


information so as to blend with the schemata
(cognitive structure) owned by the learner
