Concept of Dharma
The concept of dharma is deeply ingrained
in the Vedic philosophy. According to
Vedas there is nothing higher than dharma.
Dharma is external truth and the law of
existence. Many philosophers have defined
Dharma as ethical conduct. The world
survives because of ethical actions or
dharma.
The term dharma defines any concise
definition. However, by going through
various scriptures, we come across the
following terms which have been used as
synonyms of dharma:
• Divine law
• Path of righteousness
• Right way of living
• Harmony with nature
• Fundamental duties
• Faith
Ancient Indian Philosophy contain the following
three different concepts of Dharma:
• Mimasa : dharma is ethical action. As action is
temporary, it cannot by itself account for the
result. Before the act is completed its effect
resides in the individual and its result does not
become apparent.
• Nyaya : dharma means the right effect. It is
being just and equitable to others. It is thus a
human quality.
• Theistic Doctrine : dharma is neither action nor a
human quality. It is the outcome of one’s gow
deeds. It confers reward for action.
Concept of Karma
Karma means action, work or deed. Karma
producers results. If we do not do karma
there will be no result, karma comes an
individual but the results comers from the
whole universe. We can choose to perform
a certain act, but cannot choose the result.
The law of karma enthuses that all values,
positive or negative, accerning from man’s
actions, are capable of buying joys and
sorrows in this or future life.
The word Karma has been derived from the
Sanskrit word Kri which means to do. That
means all action or deed in karma. Even
thinking is a karma. Karma is the sum total of
our acts, both in present life and preceding
life.
There are three kinds of karma as stated
below:
• Sanchita or accumulated karma.
• Kriyamana karma or the current work.
• Prarabdha or the karma which are ready
to give enjoyment of produce.
Karma yoga is consideration of all action and their fruits
onto the Lord. According to the Vedas,
Yad yad karma prakurvit
tad brahmani samarpayet.
This means every, “bit of work that you do offer and
consecrate it allto the feet of lord”.
Karma + Yoga = Karma Yoga
Karma is action which binds us to this world. Yoga is
defined as the psychological state of inner poise and
equality. So, when a karma is done without expectation of
any fruit or any selfish motive it does not bind you to
phenomenal existence. If you act as an instrument in the
hand of the lord, as a participant in the cosmic activity of
nature without expectation of fruits, that karma becomes
Karma Yoga.
Who is Karmayogi ?
Karmayogi is one who tries to do all work as a prayer to the
supreme, and not of the complusions of egoistic vital drives
whatever they may be. Two things are indispensable in the
practise of Karma Yoga. The karma Yogi should have non-
attachment to the fruits of actions. He will have to
dedicate his actions at the altar of god with the feeling of
Ishvararpana.
Non-attachment brings freedom from sorrow and fear.
Non-attachment makes a man absolutely bold and
fearless. When he dedicates his actions at the Lotus feet of
the lord. he develops devotion to god and approaches
him nearer and nearer.
He gradually feels that god works directly through his
Indriyas or Instruments. He feels no strain or burden in
discharge of his works now. He is quite at ease.
Benefits of Karmayoga
Self management in a broader sense is not inconsistent
with karmayoga. We know that human personally consists
of an outer, active and dynamic, self and an inner, silent
self. Even in turbulent circumstances this inner self is
working. It just happen that we are not aware of this
present. The practise of Karmayoga helps us to practise of
thus in deep awareness about this real self.
This principle helps in anger management also. Anger
comes from dwelling on and attachments to objects. But
this can only invade our lower self or outer self. So the real
solution is observing detach equanimity even when you
feel the anger – treat it as if it ever someone else.
By doing selfless service you purify your heart. Egoism,
hatred, jealousy, ideas of superiority and all their kindred
negative qualities will vanish
